Nest Bedding Owl Mattress Overview

Nest Bedding is a mattress company dedicated to delivering luxury organic mattresses. Family owned, and based in the USA, Nest offers a fine selection of mattresses, from the Sparrow, the Finch, to the Quail, but for this review, I’m focusing on the Owl, one of Nest’s latex beds.

Being a hybrid mattress though, here’s a quick overview of who might enjoy the Owl:

Who Might Like The Owl Mattress?

  • All sleeping positions due to multiple firmness options
  • Fans of bouncy, responsive mattresses
  • Anyone looking for an eco-friendly mattress

Who Might Not Like The Owl Mattress?

  • Fans of slow moving, memory foam mattresses
  • Mattress shoppers on a budget
  • Sleepers who like a lot of sinkage

Nest Bedding Owl Mattress Firmness and Feel

The firmness and feel of a mattress are fairly subjective, but here’s my experience with the Nest Owl’s firmness and feel.

How Firm is the Nest Bedding Owl?

The Nest Bedding Owl mattress comes in three different firmness levels: plush, medium, and firm. At Mattress Clarity, we rank mattresses on a scale from one to 10, with 6.5/10 being the industry standard for medium-firm. For this review, we’ll focus on the medium model.

The medium model comes in at that classic medium-firm feel, a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale. This is the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress. Lighter people might enjoy the plush model, while heavyweight sleepers might enjoy the firm model.

Choose Plush If: Choose Medium If: Choose Firm If:
You’re a side sleeper who needs more pressure relief You’re an average weight back or side sleeper You’re a heavier person or an average weight stomach sleeper

Sleeping On The Nest Bedding Owl

Since this mattress is made from a combination of sturdy pocketed coils and Dunlop latex, you’re going to feel more on top of this mattress, rather than inside of it. Back sleepers will enjoy the medium option. They should feel a good amount of lumbar support from the coils.

Side sleepers should also enjoy the medium firm model, but if you’re looking for more pressure relief, look into getting the plush model.

Stomach sleepers will find the plush and medium model to be too soft. Your hips will sink in too far, which could cause back pain later down the line. If you’re a stomach sleeper, look into the firm model.

If you sleep with a partner, you can also look into getting a dual split option. This will let you choose the preferred firmness for you and your partner. But it should be worth noting, this is only available for king and California king size beds.

What Does the Nest Bedding Owl Feel Like?

Nest Bedding Owl feels rather responsive and bouncy. That’s thanks to its construction — the Dunlop latex has a bouncy, responsive feel and the coils offer even more bounce and added support. You won’t sink into this bed, which is good news for combination sleepers, who will be able to change positions with ease.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

More average weight back and side sleepers will find what they’re looking for on the Owl. The combination of the latex layer and coils will provide the balance of comfort and support back sleepers need. And with a three-inch layer of latex foam, average weight side sleepers will find the pressure relief they need on the plush version of this bed.

Average weight stomach sleepers likely will be able to keep their hips in the correct neutral alignment on the firm model, but the plush and medium options will be too soft. Ultimately though, if you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers, Mattress Clarity has a list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for you!

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

Heavyweight sleepers will need to opt for the firm Owl mattress. On the softer mattresses, they may compress the layers too much and find pressure begin to build up in their shoulders, hips, and back. But, if you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for heavy people, I suggest looking elsewhere.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

Lightweight sleepers of all sleeping positions should enjoy the plush or medium mattresses, though side sleepers should stick with the plush.

Back sleepers will find the comfort and support they need on the medium option. Lighter side sleepers will get the pressure relief they need on the plush model.

The firm option might be good for stomach sleepers, but overall, lightweight sleepers should consider the plush or the medium models.

Nest Bedding Owl Mattress Construction

Let’s take a look at all the natural materials that go into making this an eco-friendly mattress. All of these materials have OEKO-Tex certifications, which means the materials are toxin free, and are high-quality organic materials.

Mattress Height

The Owl Natural Latex Hybrid mattress is 12” tall.

Cover

On the outside of the Owl, you’ll find a cotton cover made with Joma wool and eco-flex quilting foam. There’s a bit of stretch to this cover, so you should be able to really feel the full comfort of this mattress. And being made of cotton, this cover is fairly breathable, too.

Comfort Layers

Peeling back the cover, the top layer consists of Dunlop latex. This 3” layer will feel rather soft, but also has some bounce and responsiveness. This layer is also perforated with holes, which will promote airflow to help you sleep cool.

Right underneath that, you’ll find a comfort foam layer. This acts as a transition layer and allows for even weight distribution as you rest.

Support Layer

At the bottom, you’ll find 6” of reinforced, pocketed coils. This will provide the support back sleepers need, but also provide great edge support. These coils will make for a very durable mattress.

At the very bottom, you’ll find an inch of support foam. This is purely for support, and will provide some space between the coils and whatever foundation or support you’re using for your mattress.

Nest Bedding Owl Mattress Performance

Now that we’ve discussed the firmness, feel, and construction of this mattress, let’s take a look at a few other important categories to consider when buying a new mattress.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Owl has a few things going for it that hot sleepers should pay attention to. As an innerspring mattress, it will have plenty of room between the coils that air can flow through freely.

Organic latex foam is also not going to trap heat as much as traditional memory foam. The aerated comfort layer also makes the mattress more breathable.

Top it all off with a breathable cotton cover, and hot sleepers will find a mattress that should stay cool all night.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer refers to how much you’ll feel someone getting in and out of bed, or changing positions. This could be important for couples, especially if one person is a light sleeper.

The Nest Owl actually might be one of the best mattresses for couples! Despite being an innerspring mattress, which are known to not isolate motion well, the Owl has great motion isolation. The combination of a thick latex layer and the quilted cover help reduce motion transfer in this mattress.

Edge Support

You’ll find great edge support sitting or resting on the side of the Owl. The pocketed coils are designed with reinforced edge support. This mattress shouldn’t sag at all!

Durability

This organic mattress should be quite durable. The coils at the bottom are reinforced and latex is a naturally long-lasting material. The Owl should last at least 10 years!

Off-Gassing

The Owl ships compressed inside of a box. Off-gassing refers to when you cut open the plastic surrounding the mattress and when it returns to its original shape. You may notice a chemical smell, but this is common as trapped gasses are released. This odor typically fades away after 24-48 hours — try and leave the mattress in a well-ventilated room during this period before use.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noise while using the Owl right away. However, after some use, the springs might begin to squeak.

Sex

Thanks to its responsive latex foam and coils, the Owl should be a great option for anyone looking for one of the best mattresses for sex. You won’t feel trapped in this bed, and moving around or changing positions should be fairly easy on top of this bed.

How Does The Nest Bedding Owl Compare To Other Mattresses?

When shopping for a new mattress, it’s a good idea to weigh your options. Here’s how the Owl Natural Latex Hybrid stacks up to some other mattresses in the market.

The Owl Vs The Avocado Green

When you think of a latex mattress with springs, chances are the Avocado comes to mind. Let’s see how the Owl is different from this popular mattress.

To start, the Owl has three different firmness levels to choose from, making this a good pick for most sleeping positions. The California king Owl also comes in a split option, making it good for couples with different firmness preferences.

A man sits on the edge of the Avocado Green Mattress

The Avocado Green comes in at 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, meaning it has a classic medium firm feel. Back sleepers of all body types will especially love the Avocado Green.

Both mattresses have Dunlop latex in their comfort layers. However, if you’re seeking out extra comfort, the Avocado will let you add a pillow top. While the Owl doesn’t have a pillow top add-on, if you’re looking to maximize comfort, opt for the plush model of this mattress.

Both mattresses should sleep fairly cool because of the breathable covers, coils to promote airflow, and latex foam that doesn’t trap heat. Additionally, the Avocado Green’s cover has some moisture-wicking properties to it,

Finally, in terms of price, both are around the same price point.

Who Should Get The Owl?

  • All sleeping positions because of the multiple firmness options
  • Couples looking for a split option for different firmness preferences

Who Should Get the Avocado Green?

  • Back sleepers
  • People who prefer to have that classic pillow top feel

The Owl Vs Saatva

Saatva is a popular online retailer, but they don’t compress their mattresses into cardboard boxes. They have a variety of models on their website, but for this comparison we’ll focus on the Saatva Classic.

Both the Owl and the Saatva Classic have multiple firmness levels to choose from. Here at Mattress Clarity, we love the luxury firm model, which comes in at 7/10 on our firmness scale, making it just a bit firmer than Owl’s medium model. All sleeping positions will like the Saatva, but we recommend it for back sleepers.

Saatva Mattress - Back Sleeping

Though both mattresses have cotton covers, the Saatva features a pillow top with memory foam. This makes it nice and soft at the top, and is one of our best pillow top mattresses. The memory foam underneath will add some good pressure relief, too.

Both feature coil systems for support, but Saatva’s support system features a dual set of coils. This combination of micro coils and sturdy support coils means the Saatva can handle heavier people.

Both the Saatva and the Owl will be fairly responsive and bouncy. But the Owl isolates motion a bit better than the Saatva, making it a better option for some couples.

Finally, in terms of price, both are generally around the same price range.

Who Should Get the Owl?

  • Anyone looking for an eco-friendly latex foam mattress
  • Couples looking for good motion isolation

FAQs

Still have questions about the Owl or Nest Bedding? Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions!

Can I test Nest Bedding products in person?

Yes! Nest Bedding offers in-person showrooms across the US. If you find one near you, you can test the mattress out in-person. If not, don’t worry! You have a whole year to test it out from your home.

Can you flip the Owl Mattress?

Because the Owl features a comfort layer on top, and strong supportive coils at the bottom, I would not call this a flippable mattress. The good news is, with Nest’s renewal exchange, if you feel your comfort layer forming indentations or just feel it beginning to deteriorate, you can exchange for a new comfort layer.

Does The Owl sleep hot?

No! Being made of aerated latex foam, pocketed coils, and a breathable cotton cover, this mattress won’t trap heat.
