Helix Mattress Review Overview
Helix first made a name for itself as one of the only online mattress brands to offer fully customizable mattresses, including mattresses that featured two different constructions on each side to suit partners with different sleep preferences. While the brand has paired back on its customized offerings of late, it’s still committed to serving a variety of sleepers.
Today, Helix Sleep’s lineup includes six hybrid mattresses in different firmness levels and with varying amounts of plushness. Here’s an overview of who’s likely to find a home on one of these mattresses (and who might not).
Who Might Like the Helix Mattresses?
- Hot sleepers who need a mattress that sleeps cool.
- Folks who need plenty of options to choose from.
Who Might Not Like the Helix Mattresses?
- People who want a mattress style other than a hybrid.
- Folks who don’t need or want the support of coils.
Helix Mattress Video Review
You might not be able to test out every Helix mattress in a store—so we’re bringing them (as close as possible) to you with our in-depth video review! In this video, our reviewer Marten puts each Helix model to the test. He assesses each bed’s construction and shares his experience with sleeping in every position on these models. So check it out—it’s the next best thing to trying these beds yourself!
Which Helix Mattress Should You Get?
Helix’s primary six models represent a range of firmnesses, giving you many chances to find the right fit. (You can also choose to upgrade any of these models to a LUXE version, and Helix offers a dedicated mattress for heavy people called the Helix PLUS.) Here’s a quick look at how the main models break down in terms of their suitability for different sleeping positions.

Helix Mattress Firmness and Feel
You’ve probably noticed that the topic of firmness has already come up in this roundup. That’s because firmness (and feel, which is affected by firmness) is one of the most important factors to consider when shopping for a new mattress. These factors will tell you a lot about whether a mattress is well suited to your preferred sleeping position(s). So let’s take a close look at the firmness and feel on the Helix line of mattresses!
How Firm Are the Helix Mattresses?
The Helix mattresses span a range of firmness starting with fairly soft and ending with pretty darn firm. The Helix Sunset kicks off the softest side of the spectrum; we ranked this mattress around 5.5/10 on the firmness scale. (The industry standard for medium-firmness is 6.5/10). Next up is the Helix Midnight, which we ranked around 6/10—so still softer than average. Transitioning into the middle of the spectrum, there’s the Helix Midnight and Helix Dusk. We ranked both of these mattresses around a 7/10, or just a touch firmer than average. On the firmest side of the spectrum sit the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn, both of which we ranked around a 7.5/10—or notably firmer than average.
It’s important to note here that firmness is a bit subjective. Depending on your body weight and personal preferences, you might rank these mattresses slightly differently when it comes to their firmness. For instance, heavier people might find that these mattresses feel firmer, because they could press deeper into the mattress and hit the support layers. Meanwhile, lighter-weight folks might find that these mattresses feel softer because they stay elevated in each bed’s comfort layer(s).
Sleeping on the Helix Mattresses
We spent a lot of time on the Helix mattresses so we could render a clear picture of what it’s like to sleep on each model in different positions. Here’s a look at what we found!

Because the Helix Sunset is very soft, it didn’t feel quite supportive enough for back-sleeping. Our hips sank a bit too far into the mattress, which pulled the spine out of alignment.
While the softness of the Helix Sunset didn’t work well for back-sleeping, it’s a great fit for side sleepers. The soft mattress cushions potential pressure points around the shoulder and hip, and we felt very comfortable in this position. In fact, we recommend it as one of the best mattresses for hip pain.
Because the Helix Sunset is quite soft, it’s not supportive enough for stomach-sleeping. Much like we experienced while back-sleeping, our hips sank too far into the mattress and pulled the spine out of alignment.

The Helix Moonlight felt okay but not great while back-sleeping. If you spend all night in this position, you’ll almost certainly want a firmer mattress that offers more support and helps ensure proper spinal alignment throughout the night.
Because it’s on the soft side, the Helix Moonlight is a great match for side-sleeping. We didn’t experience any uncomfortable pressure around the shoulder or hip.
Much like the Helix Sunset, the Helix Moonlight is not supportive enough for stomach-sleeping. Our hips sank too far into the mattress, throwing the spine out of alignment.

We felt great while back-sleeping on the Helix Midnight. The mattress offers a pleasant balance of comfort and support, so we enjoyed a touch of pressure relief without sacrificing spinal alignment. Out of this list, it is the best mattress for back sleepers.
While the Helix Midnight is firmer than the Helix Sunset and Moonlight, we nevertheless felt comfortable while side-sleeping on this mattress. In our experience, it offers enough pressure relief around the shoulder and hip.
We felt decent but not exceptional while stomach-sleeping on the Helix Midnight. Folks who spend all night in this position will probably want to seek out a firmer mattress that guarantees more spinal support.

The Helix Dusk is more supportive than the models we’ve reviewed so far, which helps explain why we felt especially great while back-sleeping. The supportive nature of this mattress means we’re confident that we’ll enjoy proper spinal alignment throughout the night.
Since we’re entering the firmer side of the spectrum now, it’s probably not surprising that the Helix Dusk feels a bit too firm for side-sleeping. We felt some pressure around the shoulder and hip, and this would likely lead to notable discomfort if you spent all night in this position.
Average-weight stomach sleepers could feel right at home on the Helix Dusk, which should help them maintain proper spinal alignment. Heavier-weight stomach sleepers might not obtain enough support here, however.

We found the Helix Twilight to be the best bed for back pain. It’s a great match for back sleepers who need more support due to heavier weight, back pain, or another factor. The firmer nature of this mattress helps ensure that it will keep the hips elevated and aligned with the spine.
Because the Helix Twilight is on the firmer side, we didn’t feel comfortable while side-sleeping on this mattress. We felt jammed up around the shoulder and hip.
The Helix Twilight should be well-matched to most stomach sleepers, who should enjoy plenty of spinal support in this position thanks to the mattress’s firmness.

Back sleepers who enjoy a firm feel will appreciate the Helix Dawn, which is highly supportive. That said, folks who prefer a bit of pressure relief while back-sleeping will likely find that this mattress feels too firm.
The Helix Dawn is decidedly too firm for side-sleeping, and you’re likely to feel very jammed up around the shoulder and hip. Side sleepers will be much better off on one of the softer models.
In our experience, the Helix Dawn best mattress for stomach sleepers. This firm and supportive mattress helps keep the hips elevated and aligned with the spine throughout the night.
What Do the Helix Mattresses Feel Like?
All of the Helix mattresses feature a hybrid construction that layers foam over coils. Despite these similarities, each model boasts its own unique feel.
The Helix Sunset has a balanced foam feel with a very plush top. The plushness of the comfort layer allows sleepers to sink in a bit and gives this mattress a slow-moving feel.
Even though it’s fairly soft, the Helix Moonlight has a very bouncy feel, especially compared to the less-responsive Sunset.
Much like the Helix Sunset, the Helix Midnight has a balanced feel with a slow-moving top layer. While sleepers sink into this top layer a bit, the Midnight is decidedly firmer than the Sunset.
The Helix Dusk has a firm, bouncy feel. That’s thanks to a dynamic foam in the top layer as well as the coils in the support layer.
Like the Helix Sunset and Midnight, the Helix Twilight has a slower-moving feel on top. Even though the comfort layer is a bit more enveloping, this is still a firm mattress.
Much like the Helix Dusk, the Helix Dawn has a bouncy, firm feel resulting from dynamic foam (in the comfort layer) and coils (in the support layer).

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Average-weight back sleepers are likely to prefer the Helix Midnight (which blends spinal support and pressure relief) or the Helix Dusk (which offers firmer spinal support).
Average-weight side sleepers are most likely to enjoy sleeping on the Helix Midnight (if they prefer a slightly firmer feel) or the softer and more pressure-relieving Helix Moonlight or Sunset.
Finally, average-weight stomach sleepers should feel most comfortable on the supportive Helix Twilight or Dawn.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers should find adequate support on the Helix Dusk, which offers some pressure relief while sustaining spinal alignment.
Heavyweight side sleepers should enjoy plenty of pressure relief on the softest models in the Helix line—namely, the Helix Moonlight or Helix Sunset.
Meanwhile, heavyweight stomach sleepers will most likely gravitate toward the Helix Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line) in order to obtain adequate spinal support.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should have several models to choose from: The Helix Moonlight, Midnight, and Dusk all offer plenty of spinal support and varying levels of pressure relief to suit different preferences.
Similarly, lightweight side sleepers can take their pick of the Helix Midnight, Moonlight, or Sunset—each of these models should offer enough pressure relief, while folks can tailor the level of firmness to their personal preferences.
Finally, lightweight stomach sleepers are likely to feel best supported on the Helix Twilight or Dawn.

Helix Mattresses Construction
All of the mattresses in the Helix lineup feature some similarities in their construction: They have the same cover and they layer foam comfort layers over support layers made from individually wrapped coils.
More specifically, all Helix mattresses feature a SoftTouch Design cover that is soft, stretchy, and very breathable. This construction promotes airflow through the top of the mattress. Meanwhile, each of the Helix models boasts a support layer composed of individually wrapped coils layered over a high-density base foam that provides structure and support for the mattress as a whole.
The similarities mostly stop there. The thickness, firmness, arrangement, and types of foam in the comfort layers on these mattresses varies a bit from model to model. Some models also boast additional materials. Let’s take a closer look!
Jump To
Helix Sunset | Helix Moonlight | Helix Midnight | Helix Dusk | Helix Twilight | Helix Dawn
Helix Sunset
The Helix Sunset’s comfort layer features a Memory Plus Foam that is pressure-relieving and has the slower-moving feeling that’s commonly associated with memory foam. Underneath the Memory Plus Foam, there’s a transition layer made of Helix Dynamic foam—a latex-foam alternative that’s a touch firmer, bouncier, and more supportive.
Helix Moonlight
While the Helix Sunset features Memory Plus Foam in its top comfort layer, the Helix Moonlight utilizes Helix Dynamic Foam in both the primary comfort layer and the transition layer underneath. Again, this is a latex-foam alternative, and the dual layers of this dynamic foam create a bouncier feel relative to the Helix Sunset.
Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight’s primary comfort layer is composed of Memory Plus Foam, which offers some pressure relief and body contouring. Underneath the Memory Plus Foam, there’s a transition layer of dense, high-grade polyfoam. This layer is quite responsive, which means the mattress as a whole has a quicker response to pressure.
Helix Dusk
The primary comfort layer on the Helix Dusk is made from Helix Dynamic Foam, the latex-foam alternative that’s fairly bouncy and responsive. Underneath this layer, there’s a layer of Memory Plus Foam. (So you can think of the Dusk’s construction as similar to the Helix Sunset, but flipped.) Layering the Helix Dynamic Foam on top of the Memory Plus Foam creates a bouncier and more responsive surface, while the Memory Plus Foam offers some pressure relief as sleepers sink into the mattress.
Helix Twilight
Much like the Helix Midnight, the Helix Twilight features a layer of slow-moving Memory Plus Foam over a transition layer of dense, high-grade polyfoam. The Memory Plus Foam provides a bit of cushion, but make no mistake: This is a firm mattress without much give.
Helix Dawn
Last but certainly not least, the Helix Dawn layers a comfort layer made from Helix Dynamic Foam over a transition layer of dense, high-grade polyfoam. This combination creates a sleep surface that is firm, bouncy, and responsive with barely any give.

How Does the Helix Mattresses Perform?
We put the Helix mattresses through a range of tests to assess their performance with regards to critical factors such as temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more. Keep reading to see how they did!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
All of the models boast sound temperature regulation, as the coils and breathable cover allow for plenty of airflow through each mattress. If you’re still worried about overheating, consider upgrading to a LUXE version of any mattress for additional cooling features.
Motion Transfer
Based on our tests, some models perform better than others when it comes to minimizing disturbances across the surface of the mattress. We observed the best motion isolation on the Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight. That’s no doubt thanks to the fact that each of these models has slower-moving memory foam near the top, which does a great job of absorbing motion. These really are some of the best mattresses for couples.
Edge Support
Across the board, we found decent edge support on every one of the Helix mattresses. We felt secure while sitting and lying down near the edge of each model.
Durability
Each of the Helix mattresses is made from high-density foams and sturdy coils, which means all of these models should last for a long time.
Off-Gassing
We did observe some initial off-gassing from all six of the Helix mattresses. This should dissipate within a few days if not sooner.
Noise
At the time of this review, we didn’t observe any notable noise while moving around on any of these mattresses. That said, because all of these mattresses incorporate coils, it’s possible they might start to squeak a bit over time.
Sex
When people seek out a mattress for sex, they’re generally concerned about whether it will be easy to change positions on the bed. Because all of the Helix mattresses include coils, they should be responsive enough that it’s fairly easy to move around on any of these models. That said, the models with memory foam in the top layer (namely the Helix Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight), might make it a smidge harder to change positions since they have a slower-moving feel.
Helix Company Policies
Now, let’s take a look at Helix’s fine print.
Warranty Info
All of the Helix mattresses come with a 10-year mattress warranty.
Sleep Trial
Helix offers a 100-night sleep trial with all of their mattresses.
Return Policy
You get free shipping and returns with the Helix mattresses. The company asks that you try the mattress for the full break-in period, 30 days, before deciding if you want to return the mattress or not.
How Do the Helix Mattresses Compare to Other Mattresses?
It’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping when you’re looking for a new mattress! Below, we’ve put together some short comparisons with Helix’s biggest online mattress competitors. To make things as straightforward as possible, we’ll pit the Helix Midnight head-to-head against the Nectar and Purple mattresses. Also, make sure to read our Helix mattress comparisons for more Helix comparisons like Helix vs Tuft and Needle, Helix vs Casper, and Helix vs. WinkBed.
Helix vs Nectar
The Helix Midnight and Nectar mattresses have one major construction difference: The Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress that incorporates coils, while the Nectar is an all-foam mattress.
Not surprisingly, this difference in construction provokes significant differences in feel. The Helix Midnight has a balanced foam feel with some bounce from the coils, while the Nectar has a slower-moving memory foam feel.
Even though they’re made from different materials, both the Helix Midnight and the Nectar are very durable beds. That said, the Helix Midnight will probably eke out a win here thanks to the inclusion of long-lasting coils.
Another important comparison? Firmness. The Helix Midnight is a bit firmer than the Nectar; we ranked the Helix around a 7/10 (or a bit firmer than average) and the Nectar around a 6.5/10 (or right around medium-firm).
These mattresses differ slightly in terms of price: The Helix Midnight costs around $1199.00 for a Queen-size, while the same size Nectar is a bit more affordable at $999.00.
Who Should Get the Helix Midnight?
- Hot sleepers who need a mattress that sleeps cool
- Folks who need a more supportive mattress
- Larger people who need plenty of support
Who Should Get the Nectar?
- Sleepers who prefer a memory foam feel
- Side sleepers who need plenty of pressure relief
Learn more about the Nectar in our in-depth Nectar mattress review.
Helix vs Purple
The Helix Midnight and Purple mattresses boast major differences in their constructions and materials. The hybrid Helix Midnight layers foams over coils, while the original Purple’s comfort layer is made from the brand’s proprietary Purple Grid—a hyper-elastic gel polymer with a unique feel.
Speaking of feel: The Helix Midnight’s construction creates a balanced foam feel with some bounce from the coils, while the Purple’s gel grid has a unique feel that’s simultaneously squish and firm.
Both the Helix Midnight and the Purple are durable mattresses, but the Purple’s unique materials are extra long-lasting. The Purple should be the more durable mattress here.
These beds vary slightly when it comes to firmness. The Helix Midnight is around a 7/10 (or a bit firmer than average), while we ranked the Purple right around medium-firm at 6.5/10.
When it comes to price, the Helix Midnight costs a bit less than the original Purple mattress. The Helix Midnight will run you around $1199.00 for a Queen-size, while the Purple costs around $1399.00 for the same size.
Who Should Get the Helix Midnight?
- Lighter-weight side sleepers
- Fans of a traditional mattress construction
Who Should Get the Purple?
- Heavier side sleepers
- Hot sleepers who need a mattress that sleeps extra-cool
- Folks who are looking for an extra-durable mattress
Read up on the original Purple mattress in our comprehensive Purple mattress review.

Yep! The Helix Sleep brand is known for producing quality mattresses in a variety of models that suit different types of sleepers. The best option for you will come down to your preferred sleep position(s) and other sleep needs.
How long do Helix mattresses last?
Each of the hybrid mattresses in Helix’s lineup should last for approximately 7 to 10 years.
Can you flip a Helix mattress?
No, you cannot flip a Helix mattress. Flipping one of these mattresses would result in sleeping on the firmer support layer underneath instead of the comfort layer, which would create a very uncomfortable sleep surface.
Where can you buy a Helix mattress?
You can buy Helix mattresses online by going to their website, but if you want a great deal use our Helix coupons and promo codes!
Do Helix mattresses sag?
The Helix mattresses should not sag and should not start to lose their support until you've had them for at least 10 years. The mattresses feature durable, high-quality materials that should stand up to many years of use.
