If you’re looking for a hybrid mattress with a quality construction, look no further than the WinkBed. It should also provide the balance of comfort and support you’re looking for. One of the best things about the WinkBed mattress is that you can choose from four different firmness levels. This allows a wide range of sleepers to find a bed that’s best-suited for their body type, personal preference, and sleep position.

What Makes the WinkBed Stand Out?

  • If you’re a combination sleeper, the WinkBed mattress should be a good fit for you because it can support all three sleeping positions and has nice motion isolation.
  • Priced at $1,499 for a Queen after sales and discounts, this bed should last you between 7–10 years.
  • There’s also a Plus model, ideal for heavier sleepers over 230 lb.

How the WinkBed Performed

We found this bed suits sleepers of most body types because of the multiple firmness options offered. Its Tencel cooling cover, gel-infused foam, and breathable coils promote a great deal of cooling for hot sleepers. Because of its hybrid construction, it doesn’t have the best motion transfer. This isn’t ideal for couples who are light sleepers.

Mattress Materials

A Tencel cover settles over a Euro-top style comfort layer. Gel-infused foam provides pressure relief for sleepers, and the zoned individually-wrapped coils beneath provide support.

If you want a hybrid mattress that won’t break the bank, the Helix Midnight is a great option. For a Queen-size, it is just around a $1000, a fantastic deal for a high-quality hybrid mattress. It features soft, comfortable memory and high-grade, supportive coils. The Helix Midnight is the brand’s most popular model, as its medium firmness makes it a good match for many types of sleepers.

What Makes the Helix Midnight Stand Out?

  • The balanced foam feel allows sleepers pressure relief without letting them sink too far into the mattress.
  • It’s one of the best orthopedic mattresses on the market.
  • If you’re still undecided, you can take a sleep quiz on Helix’s website for a more tailored recommendation.

How the Helix Midnight Performed

We love this mattress for lightweight sleepers, most average-weight back and side sleepers, and heavier back sleepers under 230 lb. We recommend heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers find a model with more support. The construction of the Helix mattresses allows for nice airflow, so you should sleep cool on this mattress. The Midnight also has fantastic motion isolation, meaning it’s a great option for couples, who aren’t likely to feel each other’s movements from the other side of the bed.

Mattress Materials

The Helix Midnight has two different comfort layers beneath a breathable cover: a slow-moving memory foam layer for pressure relief, and a polyfoam layer that adds responsiveness to this bed. As hybrids do, the Helix Midnight uses coils for support. However, it also incorporates a base of high-density polyfoam for added sturdiness.

If you sleep hot at night, your mattress could be the culprit. Thankfully, a mattress like the DreamCloud Premier could have you feeling cool and comfortable all night. Its breathable cashmere cover allows air to flow through the top of the mattress, and the coils promote airflow through the bottom part of the mattress. The DreamCloud should not cause you to overheat during the night.

What Makes the DreamCloud Premier Stand Out?

  • Back sleepers should also feel a mix of contouring and support on the DreamCloud Premier.
  • The DreamCloud Premier features a luxury look and feel that one might find in a nice hotel.
  • The DreamCloud Premier’s soft Euro-top provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers.

How the DreamCloud Premier Performed

Because of its medium-firm construction, we don’t recommend the DreamCloud Premier to heavy sleepers over 230 lbs or average-weight stomach sleepers. However, sleepers of all other body types and sleeping positions should find the comfort and support they need. We found this bed to be cooling and overall durable. However, it did not score as well in edge support and motion isolation.

Mattress Materials

A luxury cashmere cover greets sleepers, leading them to the multiple comfort layers beneath. Memory foam and support foam works together to create a balanced feel. High-grade coils at the bottom add durability and support.

Medium-firm hybrid mattresses are excellent because they can work for so many types of people. Out of the hybrids we have reviewed, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid is our favorite. It felt like a 6.5/10 to us, which is the industry standard for medium firmness. It boasts three layers of foam and combines them with coils, giving the mattress a balance of comfort and support. If you want something right down the middle, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid could work for you.

What Makes the Leesa Sapira Hybrid Stand Out?

  • The durable construction and medium-firm feel make this a solid option for those struggling with back pain.
  • Because of its quality materials, this mattress should last folks between 7-10 years.
  • It’s bouncy and shouldn’t cause you to feel stuck in the mattress. This makes it great for combination sleepers.

How the Sapira Hybrid Performed

This mattress is great for back sleepers because of its medium-firm construction. While it comes down to personal preference and the feel you’re going for, most lightweight and average-weight sleepers should feel comfortable on this bed. Most heavy sleepers over 300 lb and stomach sleepers are going to need a more supportive option than the Leesa Sapira Hybrid. That said, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid excels in cooling design, edge support, and durability. Because it’s responsive, couples may feel each other’s movements on this mattress.

Mattress Materials

This mattress is 11″ in height and its foundation is made of a layer of pocketed coils. Lying on top of the support layer are two foam layers: a transition layer made of high-density polyfoam, and a slow-moving memory foam on top. A breathable cover adds to the softness of this mattress.

Combination sleepers change sleeping positions throughout the night, so it’s important they found a responsive (or bouncy mattress). This allows them to sleep on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it. We love the Emma CliMax Hybrid for these sleepers; its responsive foam and springy coils should be great for ease of movement.

What Makes the Emma CliMax Hybrid Stand Out?

  • It’s designed for heavier sleepers, who should enjoy the impressive level of support this bed provides.
  • Couples should enjoy how durable, cooling, and motion-isolating this bed is.
  • Emma offers free shipping and returns in the contiguous United States.

How the Emma CliMax Hybrid Performed

The Emma CliMax Hybrid should work really well for those wanting firm support. So, it should appeal primarily to combination back and stomach sleepers (especially those of an average or heavy weight). Even those weighing over 300 lb should like the Emma CliMax Hybrid. They should find that the dense foam and sturdy coils keeps their hips lifted and spine in proper alignment.

Mattress Materials

The cover of the CliMax hybrid is a pillow-top, which is thin and moisture-wicking. Two foam comfort layers beneath provide responsiveness and zoned, or targeted, support. The strong pocketed springs are encased by an edge support system, and this all sits upon the HRX Supreme Support Layer of high-density foam.

Bear’s hybrid model contains supportive coils combined with a soft memory foam alternative. This construction balances comfort and support better than many other beds I have tried, making it a great mattress for back pain. The hips should sink in just a bit while the coils promote proper spinal alignment and give lower back muscles the support they need.

What Makes the Bear Hybrid Stand Out?

  • Based on our pressure map test, the comfort foam should relieve the pressure that side sleepers experience on their shoulders and hips.
  • All of the Bear mattresses are outfitted with covers made of Celliant, a breathable material that has been shown to promote blood flow and speed up recovery for athletes and those with active lifestyles.
  • Bear offers a generous lifetime warranty and 365-night trial, so there’s plenty of time to decide if this bed is right for you.

How the Bear Hybrid Performed

The Bear Hybrid is best suited for lightweight sleepers, average-weight back and side sleepers, and heavier back sleepers. This mattress isn’t able to provide the necessary support for some stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers. While it does have that memory foam feel on top, it’s made with a memory foam alternative that’s more responsive and shouldn’t trap heat as easily. So, most sleepers should feel nice and cool. It also boasts excellent motion isolation and stellar edge support.

Mattress Materials

The cover boasts Celliant technology. Two comfort layers, made from CertiPUR-US certified foam, contribute to a balanced feel. An 8″ coil support layer adds to this bed’s impressive durability.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is slightly firmer than average, so it’s a great option for back sleepers. It starts off with foam layers, supported below by 8 of individually wrapped coils. This construction gives the bed a bouncy and responsive feel, preventing the feeling of getting sucked into the mattress.

What Makes the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Stand Out?

  • Because each of the sections is made with high-quality materials, we expect this to be a durable mattress that should last 7–10 years.
  • The Aurora Luxe is made with CopperFlex and TitanFlex foam, which are both designed to keep the mattress cool at night. There’s also a TitanCool cover made with a Phase Change Material that prevents heat buildup.
  • It’s one of the best mattresses under $2,000.

How the Aurora Luxe Performed

Back sleepers under 300 lb, lightweight side sleepers, and average-weight stomach sleepers should enjoy the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe. While we weren’t thrilled with its motion isolation or edge support, this mattress impressed us with its cooling abilities and durability.

Mattress Materials

The TitanCool cover is literally cool to the touch, and a welcoming surface that tops 1.5″ of cooling memory foam. A gel-infused transition foam leads sleepers to the sturdy coils and base of high-density foam.

If you’re looking for a firm hybrid mattress, we highly recommend the Saatva. Available in three different firmness levels — Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm — this mattress has an innerspring feel that should appeal to many different sleepers. The firmer models are especially good choices for back or stomach sleepers who need more support.

What Makes the Saatva Mattress Stand Out?

  • If you want the feel of sleeping “on” your bed rather than sinking into it, the Saatva is a great option. With a durable layer of coils and a plush pillow-top, you should get just the right amount of “hug” without feeling swallowed up.
  • The Saatva is responsive enough to appeal to combination sleepers.
  • It’s a good choice for people who have back pain, as it’s very supportive.

How the Saatva Performed

If you like a traditional innerspring feel, then you should be able to appreciate one of the three firmnesses that Saatva offers. However, if you find yourself needing extra support for stomach-sleeping, or if you’re a sleeper over 300 lb, then you may want a sturdier mattress. While the Saatva only received a decent score for motion isolation, it did well for cooling, edge support, and durability.

Mattress Materials

An organic cotton cover is quilted with a plush Euro-Top for pressure relief. This zoned layer works with the high-grade coils to create proper lumbar support and spinal alignment. A second layer of base support coils prevents sagging and further contributes to cooling.

When it comes to finding a mattress for side sleepers, it’s all about pressure relief. That’s why we’re such fans of the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress. It is a softer-than-average mattress that features very plush comfort materials. Nolah’s proprietary foams will ease almost all pressure on your shoulders and hips. What’s more, the mattress is zoned, making it feel even softer under your shoulders and hips. Say hello to a comfortable night’s sleep.

What Makes the Nolah Evolution Hybrid Stand Out?

  • The mattress boasts proprietary materials to keep you from overheating. It also features a heat escape gusset for maximum cooling.
  • The Nolah Evolution Hybrid’s zoning provides extra lumbar support for back sleepers and those with back pain.
  • It is a great luxury mattress.

How the Nolah Evolution Performed

Lightweight sleepers, as well as back and side sleepers of most body types, should find a good amount of comfort and support. While they Nolah Evolution features coils, it’s not ideal for stomach sleepers over 130 lb. We were truly impressed with its cooling abilities, since this mattress features cooling technology in all layers. It also received great scores in motion isolation and amazing scores in durability. While the edge support could be better, we think the Nolah Evolution could last you over 10 years.

Mattress Materials

This bed is 15″ tall, and the first thing you’ll notice on this bed is the 2″ Euro-top cooling cover. The comfort layer is comprised of 2″ of cooling, pressure-relieving foam and 2″ of support foam. The support layer of strong coils is zoned to support the lumbar region.

When you’re shopping for a new mattress, you should always think about your weight. If you are a heavyweight person over 250 lb, you might need more support. The Titan Plus mattress from Brooklyn Bedding is a mattress made specifically with heavier people in mind. Proprietary TitanCaliber Coils are designed to support heavier weight, and the high-density foams are comfortable while still preventing body indentations. If you want a hybrid mattress, and you’re worried about getting enough support, take a look at the Titan Plus.

What Makes The Titan Plus Stand Out?

  • If you are a larger person and prefer something on the softer end, Brooklyn Bedding also offers the Titan Plus Luxe.
  • It scored at least a 4/5 in support, edge support, and durability.
  • The Titan Plus is responsive, making it easy for larger sleepers to move around.

How the Titan Plus Performed

Gel-infused foams, breathable coils, and an optional cooling cover will keep you from overheating. Of course, this bed is known for its support and durability. But considering its firmness, we were astonished at how good the motion transfer was for its construction.

Mattress Materials

This mattress has a thinner cover layer, comprised a polyester cover and an inch of gel-infused cooling foam. A responsive foam makes up the 2″ comfort layer, which tops the 6″ of sturdy coils and 2″ of base foam at the bottom of the mattress.

What Is a Hybrid Mattress?

A hybrid mattress simply means it features a combination of different materials. These materials can include foam, memory foam, latex, coils, or more. But it’s important to note that not all hybrid mattresses are the same. In terms of construction, mattresses can feature some very different materials that will affect the overall feel and performance of the mattress. Here are some of the benefits of a hybrid mattress, as well as a few drawbacks.

Pros

  • The combination of materials — especially coils — make hybrid mattresses extremely durable.
  • Their more complex construction allows for more bells and whistles such as extra-tall springs, reinforced edge support, and more.
  • Most of them contain an innerspring layer, which allows for lots of airflow in the mattress. In general, hybrid mattresses tend to sleep cooler than all-foam beds.
  • Hybrid mattresses are usually more responsive than other types of beds, which is good for combination sleepers and anyone who doesn’t want to sink too deeply into their sleeping surface.

Cons

  • It’s harder for hybrid mattresses to have the slow-sinking feel of memory foam, as they usually feature coils in their construction. So if you want that sinkage and deep contouring, you may be better off with an all-foam mattress.
  • While there are certainly exceptions, hybrid mattresses are generally more expensive than foam beds.
  • If the mattress contains coils or other harder materials, it will usually weigh more than a foam mattress, which can affect the setup. For instance, DreamCloud mattresses are especially heavy and might require the assistance of a friend or family member to unbox.

What to Look for in a Hybrid Mattress

If you’re planning on purchasing a hybrid mattress, there are many important points to consider. These factors range from sleeping position to cooling abilities, encompassing personal preferences and necessities.

Materials

The first thing to consider when choosing a hybrid mattress is what materials you want in the bed. With hybrid mattresses in particular, there can be many combinations of materials.

Typically, the construction of hybrid mattresses includes a top comfort layer (which largely impacts the feel of the mattress) and a bottom support layer (which, as the name suggests, impacts the amount of support you’ll get). We’ll take a look at common materials used for each of these layers.

Comfort Layers

mattress comfort layer in circular graphicHybrid mattresses can contain a few different materials in their comfort layers. Many modern hybrids feature some sort of memory foam on top. This will provide the mattress with more of a slow-moving feel and, depending on how thick the layer of memory foam is, will also add some real pressure relief to the top of the mattress. However, it may trap heat more easily and might not be the best match for hot sleepers.

Other hybrid mattresses contain latex in their comfort layers. Whether it’s synthetic or all-natural, latex will give the top of the mattress a bouncier, more responsive feel. Latex is also a very durable material and is more cooling than the majority of memory foams out there.

Some hybrid mattresses will feature extra materials in their comfort layer for airflow and cooling like Celliant, copper, gel, or graphite beads.

Support Layers

mattress springs in circular graphicInnerspring coils are used for the support layers of hybrid mattresses. What varies by specific models is the type of mattress coils used, varying between pocketed coils, open coils, offset coils, and continuous coils. Here’s a breakdown of the major types of coils one might find:

  • Pocketed coils – These individually wrapped coils provide excellent contouring, but they’re usually more expensive than other types of springs.
  • Open coils – This is one of the oldest types of coil systems, where numerous coils are bound together by a wire frame. They don’t offer the same contouring as pocketed coils.
  • Offset coils – These coils come in an hourglass shape and feature some satisfactory contouring.
  • Continuous coils – This means that the coils are basically made from one piece of wire shaped into a single coil system.

Coil Count and Coil Gauge

The coil count is the actual measure of how many coils are in the mattress. The gauge refers to how thick the coils actually are. A mattress with a high coil count and lower gauge (which means it’s thicker) should be a more supportive option.

Firmness

The firmness of a hybrid mattress will largely affect its feel and how comfortable it is. Mattress firmness is generally ranked on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.

Hybrid mattresses are generally firmer than a memory foam mattress, but softer than an innerspring mattress. Most hybrid mattresses have a medium-firm firmness level that’s comfortable for many types of sleepers. Some brands even offer hybrid mattresses with various firmness levels to choose from. For more information, check out our ultimate firmness guide.

Durability

At minimum, a new hybrid mattress should last six to seven years. And if it’s especially high-quality, it can last up to 10 years. Before purchasing an online mattress, be sure to take a look at the brand’s warranty. This should give you an idea of how long you should expect the bed to be around for.

Sleeping Position

As with any mattress, you’ll want to consider if the hybrid mattress you purchase will be a good fit for your sleeping position.

  • Side sleepers will want a hybrid mattress with a plush comfort layer that contours to the hips and shoulders.
  • Stomach sleepers will want a firmer hybrid mattress that offers support near the hips.
  • Back sleepers, like stomach sleepers, will also want a firmer hybrid mattress that keeps the spine in proper alignment.
  • Combination sleepers are unique in that they change positions throughout the night. They’ll need a responsive hybrid mattress that allows them to move around easily.

Temperature Control

mattress cooling features

Hybrid mattresses tend to sleep cooler than memory foam mattresses because of their coil base layer that naturally allows more air to flow through the mattress. If sleeping cool is especially important to you, you may want to find a hybrid mattress with extra cooling features.

Look out for cooling materials like a thin, breathable cover and gel or copper infusions in the comfort foam layer. Also note that latex will usually be a more cooling material than memory foam in the comfort layer. Plus, organic mattresses made with natural materials like wool are naturally cooling.

Price

Hybrid mattresses can easily cost between $1,000 and $2,000 for a Queen-size. Here are some reasons they tend to be more expensive than all-foam beds:

  • Hybrid mattresses usually contain coils made from steel, which is more expensive to manufacture than foam.
  • Because of all the different layers, the construction of hybrid beds is more elaborate, which means they cost more to design and build.
  • The more complex construction means that hybrid mattresses usually have more added features that can drive up the price.

However, they do make a good investment because they’re typically more durable and long-lasting. And rest assured, you can still find a good-quality hybrid mattress under the $1,000 mark. You may just have to compromise on some of the extra features.

What Does a Hybrid Mattress Feel Like?

Every mattress is going to have a slightly different feel, but in general, hybrid mattresses have a nice balanced feel of comfort and support, thanks to the base layer of coils. The bed may even feel a bit bouncy.

The main feature that can alter how a hybrid mattress feels is the comfort layer. A comfort layer with memory foam may feel slower-moving, while a latex layer will feel more cooling and responsive. The thickness of the comfort layer can also affect how soft or firm the mattress is. Plus, some hybrid mattresses include foam transition layers between the comfort and support layers that add some nuance to the feel.

To go into some more depth, we’ll compare the feel of a hybrid mattress to both memory foam and innerspring mattresses.

Memory Foam vs Hybrid Mattresses

memory foam vs hybrid mattress graphic

Comparing the difference between memory foam vs hybrid mattresses is fairly easy because they have very different feels. Memory foam mattresses are made entirely with — you guessed it — foam. This means memory foam mattresses tend to feel softer and more contouring. Memory foam mattresses also offer great pressure relief since they evenly distribute body weight across the surface.

Hybrid mattresses tend to feel bouncier and more durable. Because of the construction, these beds have a nice balanced feel of comfort and support. Hybrid mattresses are also naturally more cooling than memory foam simply because of the airflow between the coils.

You may notice more motion transfer on a hybrid mattress than you would on a memory foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses do a good job of isolating motion so you don’t feel as much movement when a sleeping partner moves in the bed. Plus, memory foam mattresses are quieter. You shouldn’t hear squeaky springs or creaks after years of use like you might with a hybrid mattress.

Innerspring vs Hybrid Mattresses

Innerspring and hybrid mattresses have a fairly similar feel. The biggest factor distinguishing a hybrid mattress from an innerspring is the top comfort layer. Some hybrid mattresses may only have a thin comfort layer. These mattresses will feel more similar to an innerspring mattress since the construction is mostly made up of coils.

Best Hybrid Mattress

Innerspring mattresses are firmer and bouncier in general. The difference in what you will feel on a hybrid mattress will depend on the material of your comfort layer, how thick it is, and if there are deeper transition foam layers beneath the comfort layer.

Who Should Buy a Hybrid Mattress?

reasons to buy a hybrid mattress

  • Those who want a memory foam feel, but want to move around easily. One of the drawbacks of an all-foam mattress is that it might be difficult to move and reposition on the bed. When sleepers sink into the foam, they could feel stuck. However, this is rarely an issue on a hybrid. Sleepers get a foam feel on top of the mattress, but the coils should keep them from sinking in particularly far, so they should have fewer mobility issues.
  • People who like memory foam mattresses, but they sleep hot. While memory foam mattresses are particularly comfortable, they’re also known to trap body heat. If someone wants this soft feel but they overheat at night, a hybrid might be ideal for them. The support coils on a hybrid allow for a significant amount of air to flow through the mattress. This helps keep the mattress from trapping quite so much heat.
  • Those who need some more support in their mattress. Most standard hybrids incorporate coils in their support layer. This adds another level of support to the mattress. So if someone is on the larger side or simply wants some extra support, a hybrid could be right for them. Hybrids can also be some of the best mattresses for lower back pain and sciatica.
  • Those who want a durable mattress. Hybrid mattresses are usually more durable than all-foam mattresses because the coils can stand up to more use than support foam. This makes hybrids a better long-term investment.

Who Shouldn’t Buy a Hybrid Mattress?

  • Those who are looking for a more affordable mattressOne drawback of hybrids is that they’re often more expensive than all-foam mattresses. That being said, the coils could make the mattress a better long-term investment.
  • Those who prefer a memory foam or latex mattress. Coils aren’t for everyone. If people want something that only has memory foam or latex foam, a hybrid might not be the right choice. There are plenty of quality mattresses out there that don’t feature coils in their construction.

FAQs

What is a hybrid mattress?

A hybrid mattress is a mattress that contains coils in its support layer and some type of foam in the comfort layer. This design is meant to give a combination of comfort and support.

What is the best hybrid mattress for side sleepers?

The Casper Hybrid mattress should be a fantastic option for side sleepers, who need adequate contouring at the shoulders and hips. This bed is softer than average and it features a zoned construction that helps with this necessary pressure relief.

Are hybrid mattresses any good?

While it does depend on what people are looking for, hybrid mattresses can be a fantastic option for many types of sleepers. Side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers should be able to find a model that works for them. Additionally, combination sleepers, hot sleepers, and couples often enjoy the features of a hybrid bed.

Are hybrid mattresses better than memory foam mattresses?

There are pros and cons to each material. Hybrid mattresses are superior in the level of support, breathability, and durability. On the other hand, memory foam mattresses are generally best for pressure relief and affordability.

How long do hybrid beds last?

Most hybrids are durable and should last you six to seven years. However, a high-quality hybrid mattress can last up to 10 years. The way we care for a mattress also plays a part in determining how long a mattress lasts. By using a mattress protector, keeping the surface clean and free of stains, and paying attention to any cleaning tips provided by mattress companies can help prolong the life of a mattress.

Do you need a box spring with a hybrid mattress?

Most hybrid mattresses do not require a box spring and can rest on any flat frame or foundation. Still, it's always a good idea to check the mattress brand's website to see if they recommend purchasing a box spring with your new mattress. Additionally, some company warranties may not cover mattresses without the use of a foundation or box spring.
