If you groggily hit the snooze button when your alarm blares, you might not be a morning person. While that’s perfectly fine for some lifestyles, it can be difficult when you work a 9-5 job or need to take kids to school.

If you want to learn how to become a morning person, we’re here to help. Take a look at these science-backed tips and tricks, and soon, you might even welcome the sight of the sun peering through your window.

Early Birds vs Night Owls

Society tends to favor morning larks, deeming them more responsible than night owls. Despite this stereotype, there is no morality attached to your sleep schedule. Some people naturally feel more alert in the evenings, and others want to tackle their hardest tasks first thing in the morning.

In fact, research suggests that this could be an evolutionary trait that protected ancient civilizations from danger. After all, if everyone in the village fell asleep at the same time, it would leave them vulnerable to predators.

How to Become a Morning Person

We don’t expect the early bird vs night owl debate to subside anytime soon. However, if you need to adjust your sleep schedule to better suit your job and responsibilities, there are many ways you can do that.

Change Your Schedule Gradually

Don’t expect to see results overnight! Changing your sleep schedule takes time and patience. Try going to bed and waking up 15 minutes earlier for a few days straight. Large adjustments could cause you to feel groggy and irritable.

Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Once you’ve reached your desired sleep schedule, stick to it! Our circadian rhythms love routine, so try not to sleep in too long (yes, even on weekends).

woman waking up and stretching

Shift Your Mealtimes

Your meal times can affect your circadian rhythm, so as you start going to bed and waking up earlier, you’ll also want to push up your lunch breaks. If you continue to eat late meals like you did as a night owl, it could negatively affect your metabolism.

Take Short Naps If You Feel Tired

The key here is not to overdo it! For the best results, limit your naps to 20-25 minutes. This will give you the boost of energy you need, without inhibiting your ability to fall asleep later that night.

Expose Yourself To Light

A few minutes of natural light in the morning can help you feel alert, energized, and refreshed. Sunlight is particularly beneficial for folks who tend to stay up later, so open the blinds in the morning and enjoy your breakfast outdoors. You might soon understand what the early birds are chirping about.

woman drinking coffee next to window

Limit Your Caffeine Intake

For some people, the effects of caffeine stay in their systems for as long as seven hours! That doesn’t mean you should quit coffee altogether, but it’s wise to limit your intake and stop drinking it during the afternoon and late evenings.

Turn Off Electronics

Some studies suggest the blue light emitted from electronics can negatively affect our circadian rhythms. If you’re having difficulty falling asleep at an earlier time, try turning off your electronics at least an hour before bedtime.

Develop a Bedtime Routine

When you create a calming night time routine, you signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down and relax. Night time routines look different for everyone, but common practices include meditation, journaling, and listening to soothing music.

Try “Inverted Snoozing”

Don’t be fooled by the term “snoozing.” This type of morning routine is actually the opposite. When your alarm clock rings, hit the snooze button as usual, but instead of closing your eyes and drifting back to sleep, get out of bed and do as many things as you can to wake yourself up. Many people brush their teeth, open the blinds, get dressed, and pour a bowl of cereal in this short time frame. It’s tough to go back to sleep after doing all of that!

How Long Does It Take To Become a Morning Person?

Becoming a morning person is like creating any new habit – it takes time. If you gradually shift your wakeup time by a few minutes every week, it can take as long as two months to rewire your routine. Don’t try to become a morning person overnight; you’ll likely end up falling back into your normal sleep schedule after a few days.

Is It Better to be a Morning Person?

Though society tends to praise morning people, there’s no moral code attached to one’s sleep schedule. Certain professions require people to work late at night, while others work from 9-5. If your sleep schedule currently works for your lifestyle, don’t feel pressured to change it!

FAQS

Have more questions about how to become a morning person? Check out our FAQ section for more information!

Is it possible to become a morning person?

It’s possible to become a morning person, but it takes time. For the best results, gradually shift your bedtime earlier every week, expose yourself to natural light first thing in the morning, and limit your screen time at least an hour before bed.

What makes someone a morning person?

Morning people feel more alert and focused in the morning, while night owls tend to hit their stride later on in the day. There’s no right or wrong way to schedule your sleep – the world needs both types of people!

Are morning people happier?

Many studies show a correlation between happiness levels and early wake-up times, suggesting that morning people are happier than night owls. The cause of this trend remains unclear, however, and it could be due to the fact that modern life is better suited for morning larks.

If you deal with sleep apnea and sleep hot as well, you want a mattress that will relieve pressure while keeping you cool. That’s why we are such big fans of the Bear Original mattress – it is a soft memory foam mattress that contains some nice cooling features. Its comfortable design offers great pressure point relief for side sleepers, and its Celliant cover and gel-infused memory foam both dissipate heat. Overheating is an issue with many memory foam mattresses, but it shouldn’t be with the Bear!

The Layla mattress is one of our favorite soft mattresses as its thick memory foam relieves pressure on the shoulders and hips while still keeping your spine properly supported. Latex mattresses are often a good fit for sleep apnea, because of their hypoallergenic materials. Allergies can exacerbate sleep apnea symptoms, but a mattress like the Birch can help prevent allergen buildup in your mattress. Also, similar to the other mattresses on this list, the Birch is ideal for side sleeping. The mattress comes with or without a pillow top, and we do recommend splurging for the pillow top. This adds more comfort to the top of the mattress, making it even more comfortable for side sleeping.

What Makes The Birch Stand Out?

  • The Birch is a durable, long-term investment.
  • The mattress will not trap heat and will be a good match for hot sleepers.
  • It is bouncy and easy to move around on.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when you stop breathing during the night and wake up. You may not realize you are waking up at first, which is why sleep apnea is so difficult to diagnose. However, you are waking up, and this prevents you from getting a good night’s sleep.

However, it’s more than just lost sleep. Sleep apnea can also increase your chances of heart disease, hypertension, and Alzheimer’s.

The most common type of sleep apnea is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat muscles relax, narrowing or collapsing your airway. When this happens, you wake up in order to start breathing again.

You might also suffer from Central Sleep Apnea, which occurs when your brain does not send the correct signals to maintain proper breathing while you sleep. If you have Complex Sleep Apnea, you deal with both Obstructive and Central Sleep Apnea.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

At first, many sleep apnea sufferers might not realize that they are experiencing sleep apnea. This is because the symptoms of sleep apnea occur while they are sleeping. If you sleep alone, you may have no idea that you are exhibiting signs of sleep apnea.

However, if you sleep with a partner, they will have plenty to tell you. First off, you will probably be snoring loudly during the night. Also, you may seem to choke in your sleep and may even stop breathing.

Snoring Because Of Sleep Apnea

If you don’t sleep with a partner, you’ll notice some symptoms during the day. you will feel daytime fatigue and will probably have a headache. You may also have a sore, dry throat as well.

How To Choose A Mattress For Sleep Apnea

When you’re choosing a new mattress for sleep apnea, there are a few things to keep in mind. First off, you want to think about your sleeping position. Side sleeping is the best sleeping position for sleep apnea as it helps open your airways, preventing apnea incidents. You can also sleep on your stomach, but this can lead to other pain issues.

You’re going to want to sleep on your side, so you will want a mattress with good pressure relief. Side sleeping, your weight is concentrated on your shoulders and hips, and you need a mattress that will relieve buildup around those pressure points. Consider a softer mattress that will let you sink in a fair bit.

A man sleeps on his side on the Big Fig mattress

At the same time, don’t choose a mattress that is too soft. If you sink in too far, it could throw your spine out of alignment. This can lead to back pain and other joint pain issues. Choose a soft mattress, but make sure the mattress offers some good support as well.

Hybrid mattresses are often a great match for sleep apnea because they provide the comfort of foam and the support of coils. A memory foam mattress can offer great pressure relief but, again, make sure it isn’t too soft.

Finally, you want to pay attention to the materials used in the mattress. Specifically, are they hypoallergenic or not? A mattress with hypoallergenic materials can prevent dust mites and allergen buildup in the mattress and this can, in turn, make you feel less congested. Congestion from allergies can exacerbate sleep apnea symptoms, so this is something to keep in mind.

Firm vs Soft Mattress For Sleep Apnea

If you’re looking for the best mattress for sleep apnea, you do want to think about firmness levels. Generally speaking, a soft mattress is going to be better for sleep apnea. Soft mattresses offer better pressure relief than firm mattresses, making them a better fit for side sleeping.

However, stomach sleeping can also work if you struggle with sleep apnea. While it can lead to back pain issues, stomach sleeping can still ease sleep apnea symptoms. If you do decide to sleep on your stomach, a firm mattress will be the better choice. This will help keep your hips elevated and your entire body supported.

Summary

Again, here is our list of the best mattresses for sleep apnea.

FAQs

Can a bad mattress cause sleep apnea?

A bad mattress cannot actually cause sleep apnea, but it can exacerbate an existing condition. If the mattress does not let you sleep on your side, it could cause you to wake up more often during the night.

What type of mattress is best for sleep apnea?

A soft mattress that provides good pressure relief is the best. This will keep you comfortable when side sleeping, the best position for those with sleep apnea.

Is a firm mattress better for sleep apnea?

In general, firm mattresses are not the best for sleep apnea. Side sleeping is ideal for sleep apnea, and a soft mattress is better for this position. However, stomach sleeping can also help ease sleep apnea and, in this case, a firmer mattress is better.

Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Overview

Tuft & Needle is a popular sleep product retailer. We’ve reviewed the Tuft & Needle Original and Mint mattresses, as well as the brand’s percale sheets and the Original Foam pillow.

You can find Tuft & Needle products just about anywhere these days, and they have a wide range of products to meet everyone’s needs. But this review focuses on the Tuft & Needle Down pillow. Before I get into the nitty gritty, here’s a quick overview so you know what to expect:

Who Might Like the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow?

  • Fans of down pillows
  • People who prefer soft to medium-firm pillows
  • Anyone who needs a machine-washable pillow

Who Might Not Like the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow?

  • Fans of slow-moving memory foam pillows
  • People who prefer firm pillows
  • Shoppers on a budget

Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Firmness and Feel

Firmness and feel are arguably the two most important factors when choosing a new pillow. Let’s discuss them for the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

How Firm is the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow?

In my experience, the Tuft & Needle Down pillow was somewhere between soft and medium-firm. Down typically will feel soft and plush, but this is rather full of down clusters, so it feels supportive enough to land it close to medium-firm.

Sleeping on the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow

Using the Tuft & Needle Down pillow should be a good option for most sleeping positions. As a side sleeper, I started there, and I felt decent support. This is a rather tall down pillow, so while it deflated some, it wasn’t enough to throw my head and neck out of alignment.

A man sleeps on his side using the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

But when I moved to my back, this pillow really shined. In my experience, most down pillows are ideal for back sleeping, so this isn’t anything out of the ordinary for me. But it’s still a great option for back sleepers who love the cushioning feel of down pillows, but need support to keep their heads in a neutral position.

Moving to my stomach I had no trouble compressing this pillow as a heavier person. It is rather tall, however, so people lighter than me might not compress it as much as I did. And this isn’t an adjustable pillow, so the loft can’t be changed, and you can’t take out the down fill.

For this review, I received the standard-size pillow, but you do have the option to purchase a king-size as well.

30-60 min Nap

When it came time to nap on the Tuft & Needle Down pillow, I decided to start on my back. Though I’m a natural side sleeper, I really favored this pillow for back sleeping. For me, it kept my head in a neutral position while I rested.

A man sleeps on his back using the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

However, down pillows aren’t my preference. I tend to prefer firmer, memory foam pillows. And while I did find comfort on my back, sometimes the down would get too flat and I’d have to readjust or fluff the pillow.

What I will say is that it is very easy to move around on this pillow. So, if you’re a back/side combination sleeper who loves down pillows, this is a good option.

What does the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Feel Like?

The Tuft & Needle Down pillow feels very soft and plush. When you rest your head on this pillow, you’ll get that sinking, cushioning feeling that down pillows are known for. But because it’s a taller pillow, you should feel some good support.

A hand makes an indentation in the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight sleepers of all positions should find comfort with this pillow. Ideally, I’d recommend it to back sleepers who love down pillows. But thanks to the high loft of this pillow, average weight side sleepers could use this pillow without worrying about neck pain developing. Stomach sleepers could also get this pillow low and flat enough, but I’d recommend one of the best pillows for stomach sleepers instead.

A man rests on his stomach using the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers should enjoy the Tuft & Needle Down pillow. I think this pillow has enough fill to provide comfort and support for back sleepers. Heavier stomach sleepers should be able to compress the pillow low and flat enough to sleep comfortably. Some heavyweight side sleepers could enjoy this pillow, but ultimately, I’d be worried about heads craning too far down, which is not ideal for side sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

For lightweight sleepers, I’d recommend this pillow for side sleeping only. Some customer complaints involved the pillow being too tall, which put strain on the neck and upper back. Because this pillow has a high loft, it would be ideal for lightweight side sleepers who wouldn’t compress the pillow as much.

Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Construction

Let’s take a look at the materials that make up the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

Cover

The outer pillowcase is made of cotton that Tuft & Needle calls “Standard 100” and is OEKO-Tex certified, meaning it was grown and made without harmful chemicals.

The white, cotton cover of the Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

Core

On the inside, you’ll find, as the name suggests, down clusters. Tuft & Needle uses responsibly sourced North American down. This gives it a rather fluffy feel. But the pillow is stuffed full of down clusters, so it should still be quite supportive, too.

Weight

Tuft & Needle mentions that the pillow is 3 lb.

Height/Loft

Pillow loft refers to how tall a pillow is. The Tuft & Needle Down pillow is 8” tall. This is pretty tall, but keep in mind that down pillows will deflate when you use them. Your head and neck will reduce the pillow’s loft regardless of what sleeping position you’re in.

Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Performance

Now that we’ve gone over how the Tuft & Needle Down pillow performs for different sleeping positions, let’s discuss a few more key considerations.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

For my fellow hot sleepers out there, the Tuft & Needle Down pillow could be a good option to stay cool. With a breathable cotton cover, and with room in between the feathers for airflow, it shouldn’t overheat during the warmer months. But since down is a natural insulator for birds, this pillow could feel nice and warm in the cooler months as well. In my experience, I didn’t really notice any hot spots or feel the need to flip the pillow over.

It’s not the best option if you constantly run hot, or get hot quickly during the night. For that, we have a list of the best cooling pillows for you to check out!

Off-Gassing

The Tuft & Needle pillow came in a cardboard box, but it wasn’t compressed. So once you remove the packaging, the pillow (give or take a little fluffing) can be used right away.
You won’t have to worry about off-gassing or a chemical smell to this pillow.

Care Instructions

This pillow is machine-washable! This is one of the perks of down products. Here’s what Tuft & Needle recommends for care instructions:

  • Wash in a cold water cycle with a mild detergent. Do not use bleach
  • Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting (this may take a few dry cycles)

You could also spot clean as necessary, but Tuft & Needle makes a point to mention that you can clean this pillow completely at home. No need to take it to a dry cleaner.

Allergies

Unfortunately, down products aren’t the best choice for people with sensitive allergies. Down can trap allergens in your sleep environment, so this isn’t the best hypoallergenic product. You can, however, machine-wash this pillow. Overall, if you’re looking for something that is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, look at our best down alternative pillows list.

Company Policies

Let’s go over some company policies Tuft & Needle has so you know what to expect before purchasing.

Warranty Info

Tuft & Needle offers a 2-year limited warranty on the down pillow. This covers manufacturing or workmanship defects.

Sleep Trial

Tuft & Needle offers a 100-night sleep trial for the down pillow. This gives you a little over three months to test out the pillow to see if it’s right for you.

Return Policy

If, during the 100-night trial, the down pillow isn’t right for you, you can return the pillow for a full refund. Tuft & Needle offers hassle-free returns, and will cover shipping for customers in the continental US (sorry, Hawaii and Alaska).

Common Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Complaints

There has been much praise for the Tuft & Needle Down pillow online. But that doesn’t make it the perfect option for everyone. I’ve looked through some customer reviews and noticed a few common complaints.

The first is that some customers found that the pillow became too flat after a few uses. It’s common to fluff down pillows regularly, but because the clusters get compressed very often, down pillows do have a tendency to fall flat quicker than other pillows.

On the other side of the spectrum, some people found that it was too firm and they couldn’t compress the pillow enough. This is a pillow that is stuffed to the brim with down clusters; it’s 8” tall after all. In my experience, as a heavier person, I was able to compress this pillow enough to sleep comfortably. But people who are lighter than I am might need to opt for a softer, or shorter pillow to use.

How Does Tuft & Needle Down Pillow Compare To Other Pillows?

The Tuft & Needle Down pillow is one of the best down pillows for a reason. But not everyone loves down pillows. So, let’s see how the Tuft & Needle Down pillow compares to one of the brand’s other pillows and a down alternative option.

Tuft & Needle Down vs Tuft & Needle Original Foam

Tuft & Needle has a variety of options available for its customers. In the pillow landscape, the brand offers three types of pillows: down, down alternative, and memory foam. Let’s compare the down pillow to the Original Foam pillow.

A woman pulls back the outer cover of the Tuft & Needle Original foam pillow.

Most notably, the fill will be much different. The Original Foam uses a material called T&N Adaptive Foam, which will still contour to your head and neck, but it feels more responsive than traditional memory foam. Side sleepers should find excellent head and neck support here. The Down pillow will be a better option for back sleepers and some heavier stomach sleepers.

Hot sleepers should also consider the foam pillow thanks to a graphite infusion and cooling gel beads which will pull body heat away. Down might not be the best option if you’re an exceptionally hot sleeper, but the Down pillow shouldn’t overheat.

Who Should Get the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow?

  • Back and stomach sleepers
  • Fans of down pillows

Who Should Get the Tuft & Needle Original Foam Pillow?

  • Side sleepers
  • Fans of memory foam pillows

Read our full Tuft & Needle Original Foam pillow review.

Tuft & Needle vs Saatva

One of the reasons that down alternative was made was because, unlike down, it’s hypoallergenic. Though some down alternative pillows are very affordable, they may not last as long. But, a high-quality down alternative pillow that should last you a while and exudes luxury comes from Saatva.

A man sleeps on his side using the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow.

Like the Tuft & Needle Down pillow, the Saatva pillow feels very soft and plush. But because it’s made from polyester microfibers, it does a better job of retaining its shape as opposed to the Down pillow. Both of these pillows do have luxury price points, but they’re fairly durable and should be worthy investments.

In terms of care, you can put the Tuft & Needle Down pillow in the washing machine, while Saatva only recommends a spot clean treatment.

Who Should Get the Tuft & Needle Down Pillow?

  • Fans of down pillows
  • Anyone who wants to machine-wash their pillows

Who Should Get the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow?

  • Fans of plush down alternative
  • People who need a guaranteed hypoallergenic pillow

FAQs

Let’s cover some frequently asked questions about Tuft & Needle Down pillow.

What if I don’t like my Tuft & Needle Down pillow?

The good news is that you have 100 days to test out the Tuft & Needle Down pillow. This is just over three months, but by the 30-day mark, you should have a good idea on whether or not this will work for you.

If, during that 100-day period, you decide that this isn’t the right pillow for you, you can return it for a full refund. If you’re not sure about going through the process, hopefully this Tuft & Needle pillow review helped you make a choice before clicking “check out.”

How long will the Tuft & Needle Down pillow last?

Down is a fairly durable material. With good care, it can last anywhere between 3 to 5 years. Tuft & Needle offers a limited two-year warranty on this pillow that only covers manufacturing or workmanship defects.

But because you have the option to machine-wash this pillow, it should last you a good while.

So you’re in the market for a more comfortable sleep experience but not ready to splurge on a new mattress? Not to worry. Whether your needs have changed or your bed is starting to show its age, there are plenty of ways to improve the comfort of your mattress.

How to Make a Mattress More Comfortable

So you’re ready for a more comfortable mattress but not prepared to splurge on a new one? Not a problem. There are plenty of ways to improve the comfort of your existing mattress.

But you might be wondering, “What makes a mattress comfortable?” The answer depends on several factors, such as firmness, feel, and mattress materials. For a full rundown, take a look at our comprehensive mattress buying guide.

Add Bedding Accessories

One of the easiest ways to make your mattress more comfortable is to add a few bedding accessories. Take a look at our favorites:

Mattress Topper

A mattress topper is the #1 way to drastically improve the comfort of your mattress, especially if you need added softness and pressure relief. Some toppers can even help a mattress sleep cooler.

Most toppers are made from memory foam, latex, or polyfoam. In fact, many mattress companies produce mattress toppers that have a lot in common with the mattresses they sell – so you can upgrade without paying for an entire mattress.

Check out the 10 Best Mattress Toppers for more ideas.

Comforter

Once you’ve mastered what you’re sleeping on, it’s time to tackle the comforter that covers you up. When considering the best comforter, keep in mind whether you sleep hot. Even though you might think of all comforters as heat traps, many comforters today have breathable materials that regulate temperature. Some even feature moisture-reducing properties – important if you’re a sweaty sleeper.

From filling type to degree of fluffiness, many options exist that allow you to find the perfect comforter for your needs.

A man sleeps on his side with the Saatva comforter.

Body Pillow or Supportive Head Pillow

We know we harp on alignment – but that’s because it’s so important! If you’re not comfortable at night, your mattress might not be entirely to blame. By using properly sized pillows, you can sleep better.

Your head needs to stay aligned with your spine, and you don’t want a kink in your neck. To accomplish this, stomach sleepers need a very thin pillow, back sleepers a medium-loft pillow, and side sleepers a thick pillow.

Pillows are also helpful for keeping your legs and hips aligned. Side sleepers should sleep with 1–2 pillows between their legs to keep their hips aligned, while back sleepers often require a pillow beneath their knees. Alternatively, side sleepers may find that a body pillow works well to keep the legs and arms comfortable.

Soft Sheets

Nothing feels better than slipping into a clean bed with fresh sheets. You only need to spend one night in a nice hotel to recognize the difference luxury sheets can make. You don’t necessarily need to break the bank getting high-end sheets, but making sure your sheets are soft and comfortable can improve your sleep experience.

Make the Mattress Softer or Firmer

Do you feel like your mattress is no longer the comfort level you desire? Your personal preferences or needs may have changed, or your once-firm mattress could have experienced some material breakdown and lost some of its firmness. Whatever the reason, if you want to make your mattress softer or firmer, we have some tips.

Making your mattress softer is the easier of these two tasks – most mattress toppers do exactly this. Add a memory foam topper or other comfort material mattress topper to your bed to decrease its firmness. Generally speaking, the thicker the topper, the more difference it makes because it gives your body room to sink in.

On the other hand, sometimes you want a firmer mattress. Unfortunately, this is harder to achieve. Mattresses lose firmness as they break down, and while a few minor changes can help, they’re unlikely to fix the problem. You can always try rotating your mattress, flipping it if it’s flippable (most mattresses aren’t), or using a new, supportive bed frame. If poor support could be a problem, test it out by placing your mattress on the floor before buying something new.

There are also some mattress toppers designed to make your mattress firmer, so if the above tips don’t work, there’s still hope!

How to Make an Old Mattress More Comfortable

Mattresses are a major investment, so it’s understandable to want to get as many years as possible from them. On average, a mattress lasts between 7 and 10 years. Chances are, you’ll start to notice when your mattress needs replaced.

If your mattress sags, makes a lot of noise, smells weird, aggravates your asthma or allergies, or no longer allows for a good night’s sleep, it might be time for it to go.

But we know that buying a new mattress is a big step, so here are some tips for sprucing up your existing mattress.

Fix Any Sagging

You know your mattress is starting to lose its luster when it sags. Rotating your mattress is the first step to both prevent and fix sagging. If you sleep alone, changing which side of the bed you sleep on can also slow the inevitable creep of sagging.

Assuming you’ve already taken these steps, what else can you do to fix sagging? A quick fix is adding a layer of plywood between your mattress and its base to provide extra support. You can also use pillows in the sagging areas to even things out.

Lastly, check your mattress’s warranty! Many manufacturers guarantee that mattresses will not sag more than a certain number of inches during the warranty period. If you notice a significant indentation, the company might replace or repair your mattress.

Clean Your Mattress

There’s something to be said for the psychological impact of knowing you’re sleeping on a dirty mattress. It’s hard to get truly comfortable when you know you’re lying atop a sea of stains. We recommend cleaning your mattress to jumpstart your mattress’s rejuvenation.

FAQs

Still have questions about how to make your bed feel more comfy? Check out our FAQ section below!

Why are hotel mattresses so comfortable?

You may be pleased to discover that one thing that makes hotel mattresses so comfortable is the use of mattress toppers! Hotels put a lot of thought into creating a luxurious sleeping experience, including a high-quality bed, soft 300 thread-count (or higher) sheets, soft pillows, and mattress toppers.

Are firm mattresses comfortable?

Firm mattresses certainly aren’t for everyone, but they can be comfortable for stomach sleepers, who require extra support to keep their hips from sinking into the bed. Some back sleepers and heavier sleepers also prefer firm mattresses, as they provide enough support to maintain spinal alignment.

Are cheap mattresses comfortable?

Mattress price is not necessarily directly related to comfort, though higher-quality materials provide various benefits. Pricier mattresses are often more durable, which can mean more comfort in the long run, as the breakdown of cheap materials can impact the feel of your bed.

How can I make an air mattress more comfortable?

To maximize comfort, ensure the air mattress is fully inflated and place it on a carpet or rug to keep it from slipping around. You can even add a mattress topper for extra comfort. Check out our article for more tips on making air mattresses more comfortable.

Whether you are a first time parent, a friend of an expectant mother, or having your fifth baby, it’s common (and encouraged) to catch up on the latest sleep studies and newborn sleep advice. Sleep deprivation may already be expected by every parent, but it doesn’t mean you and your baby can’t still have long naps and sweet dreams.

Want to know the latest advice on when babies can sleep on their stomachs and how they can do it safely? Read on to learn more!

Baby Sleep Milestones

A baby will hit a few different sleep milestones throughout their first year of life. Parents should make certain adjustments along the way. Read on below to learn more common sleep milestones your little one will hit in its first 12 months of age. And check out A Parents’ Guide to Helping Children Sleep to learn even more about helping your baby get the sleep it needs.

Fewer Night Feedings and Longer Sleep Times

A newborn baby will sleep in three to four hour stretches for the first few months of its life. Your newborn should be sleeping between 12 to 18 hours a day, and will mainly only wake up when they’re hungry. According to the Cleveland Clinic, new parents should not let their babies sleep longer than five hours at a time in the first month and half.

You’ll notice your baby sleep for longer and longer stretches as he or she gets older. Between 4-6 months of age, your baby could be sleeping 5 to 6 hours in a row. When your baby hits about 2 months of age, you can start encouraging them to sleep more at night by keeping the lights dim and stimulation low during nighttime feedings. When your baby is about one year old, you can also try introducing a security object like a blanket to your baby’s crib to help them self-soothe after waking up at night.

Rolling Over Both Ways

Your baby may also start rolling over at night somewhere around 4 months of age. You can let your baby stay in the sleeping position they roll into once they are able to roll over. But, make sure you put your baby to sleep on their back. You should always start your baby on their back at bedtime or naptime. At around 6 months of age, you can transition your baby into their own room. Prior to 6 months, your baby should sleep in the same room as you (but in their own crib or bassinet).

Which Position is Best for Babies to Sleep In?

It is safest for babies to sleep on their backs. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends this position. Place your baby on its back on a flat and firm sleep surface in a bassinet or crib before bed. Check out our Crib Mattress Buying Guide for help choosing a bed for your newborn.

Back sleeping is the safest of all baby sleeping positions because it can reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) it can also help babies clear fluids from their airways more easily, because babies’ bodies are built differently from ours. So, you don’t need to worry about your baby choking on spit up while back sleeping.

If you’re concerned that back sleeping is giving your baby a flat spot on the back of his or her head, encourage tummy time when your baby is awake. But do not encourage your infant to sleep on his or her stomach to combat a flat spot. The spot should resolve on its own.

Baby sleeping on stomach

Is it Safe for Babies to Sleep on Their Stomach?

Letting your infant sleep on its stomach is not encouraged. It increases the risk of suffocation, SIDS, and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID). Place your baby on his or her back at bedtime and naptime. Read on below to learn more about SIDS and SUID.

The Risk of SIDS

According to the NIH, SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby under one year old. SIDS deaths do not have a known cause, even after investigation. SIDS is sometimes called crib death because it often occurs when the baby is sleeping, and it is the leading cause of death among babies from 1 month to 1 year old. Most SIDs deaths occur when babies are 4 months old or younger. Babies are at higher risk for SIDs if they sleep on their stomachs, sleep on soft surfaces or with loose bedding, overheat at night, co-sleep with parents, or are exposed to cigarette smoke.

SUID

SUID is a term used to define the sudden and unexpected death of a baby under one year old. SUID includes all sudden and unexpected deaths, and encompasses deaths from SIDs. Unlike SIDS, SUID encompasses other sleep-related infant deaths like those from suffocation or strangulation.

When Can Babies Sleep on Their Stomach?

Babies can sleep on their stomachs when they are able to roll over to their stomach and back on their own. In those cases, if your baby rolls over on its own at night it is safe to let them keep stomach sleeping until they wake up. But you should continue to place your babies on their backs when it is time to put them back to sleep at night or for a nap.

Some studies suggest that tummy sleeping could help certain babies with bad acid reflux. But you need to consult with a pediatrician about risk factors and safe sleep recommendations before placing a baby on his or her stomach at night. In general, most babies who can not roll over should not stomach sleep without observation by a healthcare provider.

How to Keep Your Baby Safe While Sleeping on Their Stomach

There are a few different things you can do before your baby’s first birthday to ensure he or she is in a safe sleep environment. These tips are especially helpful if your child tends to roll over and sleep on its stomach during the night. Read on below to learn about the best sleep practices for your child, and check out our Everything You Should Know About Your Baby’s Sleep article for even more info.

Stop Swaddling or Switch to Sleep Sacks

Swaddling your child in a blanket could be a suffocation or strangulation risk if your baby moves around a lot at night. Most babies will move around and startle often in their sleep, so having them wrapped in a blanket that they could get stuck in or that could cover their faces when you are not watching is dangerous.

If your baby can’t sleep without being swaddled, consider switching over to a sleep sack. These sacks are like wearable blankets that keep your baby’s arms free and give them space to roll and kick when they need to.

Keep the Crib (or Pack n Play) Free of Any Objects During Sleep Periods

You should also keep your baby’s crib or playpen free of loose objects during naptime and bedtime. At about one year, introducing one comfort object is safe. Before then, your baby could get stuck under things like bumper pads and loose blankets, increasing the risk of suffocation. Your baby’s sleep surface should be firm and level, and you should only put a fitted sheet on it. Blankets, toys, and loose sheets should not be in your baby’s sleep area.

Offer a Pacifier

Pacifiers can reduce SIDs risks in babies. Offer your baby a pacifier after breastfeeding is well established (if you are breastfeeding) or, if you are not breastfeeding, as soon as you’d like to. Do not attach the pacifier to clothing, toys, or blankets and do not coat it in anything like honey. If your baby does not want a pacifier or it falls out of his or her mouth during sleep, that is alright. There is no need to wake your child up to replace it or force your baby to use a pacifier.

Set the Thermostat Accordingly

Babies can overheat at night if they are wearing too many clothes for the room temperature. Set the thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees to keep your baby from overheating or getting too cold at night. Preventing overheating can reduce the risk of SIDS.

Avoid Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

Exposure to cigarette smoke in the womb or secondhand in the house or car can increase the risk of SIDS. Avoid exposing your child to secondhand smoke, as it can increase the risk of health problems in addition to SIDS.

Heated electric blankets are great cold weather bedding accessories. They’re cozy, cuddly, and can be pain-relieving for those with stiff joints in cold damp weather. But, they can be a pain to clean!

Wondering how to wash your heated blanket or if your heated blanket can be washed at all? You’re in the right place. Read on to learn everything you need to know about washing your heated bedding.

Can You Wash a Heated Blanket

Most modern electric blankets can be washed either by hand or in the washing machine. Their heating elements are completely encased in waterproof, fireproof material, so unless your blanket is ripped or torn, you should be able to wash it without much trouble. Wondering if your non-heated blankets are machine washable? Check out our Types of Blankets guide to find out.

Older electric blankets may not be washable, so be sure to check the washing instructions on your blanket’s care tag if you have them available. As a rule of thumb, if you cannot remove your blanket’s power cord or see exposed electrical wiring in your blanket, you should avoid getting it wet.

How to Wash a Heated Blanket

So, how do you wash a heated blanket? Depending on your preference, you can hand wash or machine wash your blanket. If you have them available, be sure to double check the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you’re doing what’s best for your specific bedding.

Hand Washing

Before you hand wash an electric blanket, make sure it’s unplugged and the control cord is removed from the blanket itself. You don’t want to get this piece of the blanket’s wiring wet. Next, fill your tub with lukewarm water and add mild laundry detergent. Swish the detergent around until you have soapy water in the tub. Then put your blanket in the tub and let it soak for about 15 minutes.

After soaking, drain your tub and rinse off your blanket with cool water. You can squeeze the blanket gently to remove excess water, but don’t wring it out. Wringing your heated blanket could damage its electrical components.

If your blanket just needs a spot clean, we recommend using mild detergent and warm water.

Machine Washing

If you’d prefer to machine wash your electric blanket, wash it without anything else in the machine. If you need to balance the load, you can add a few bedsheets. Just be careful not to add anything that will create a lot of lint! You can use warm, cool, or cold water, but avoid a hot water cycle. You should also avoid using bleach or fabric softener, which can damage your blanket’s internal wiring.

Before washing, double check your blanket’s care label and be sure to unplug any electrical cords. Next, place the blanket in the washer and run a gentle or delicate cycle. A fast spin cycle is not good for the wire insulation in heated blankets. Once the wash cycle is complete, it is time to dry your heated blanket.

How to Dry a Heated Blanket

We recommend using a drying rack or clothesline and letting your heated blanket air dry. If you don’t have a rack or line, you can hang your blanket over your shower rod to dry. If you don’t want to air dry your blanket, it is safe to put it in the dryer as long as you do not use high heat. Choose a low heat setting and let your blanket tumble dry for 10-15 minutes. You should remove it from the dryer while it is still slightly damp and stretch it out to let it air dry the rest of the way.

If you do your laundry in a laundromat, do not dry your blanket in a machine. Commercial dryers get too hot and could damage your heated blanket, even on a low heat setting. Air dry your heated blanket if you plan to take it to a laundromat. You should also avoid dry cleaning your heated blanket. The dry cleaning process can use high heat and harsh chemicals that may damage its internal wiring.

How Often to Wash a Heated Blanket

We recommend washing your heated blanket about once a month if you use it often during the winter. You can spot clean it in the meantime. Even if you use your heated blanket every night, you should be using it on top of your comforter or duvet (instead of directly on your body). This prevents the risk of overheating and means you won’t need to wash it as often as you wash the rest of your bedding. Wondering How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets? We recommend cleaning your bedding at least once a week.

FAQs

Can you wash a heated blanket with wires in it?

Yes, you can wash a heated blanket with wires in it. But you will need to unplug the power cord (that plugs into the wall) from your blanket before washing it. If your blanket’s power cord is not removable, check the care tag to make sure your blanket is washable.

Are heated blankets safe?

Yes, heated blankets are safe. Modern electric blankets are well insulated with fireproof material. But if you have an old or damaged heated blanket it may be a fire risk. Pregnant women and young children may also overheat under a heated blanket, so we recommend these folks use caution.

What happens if an electric blanket gets wet?

Nothing should happen if your modern heated blanket gets wet. Aside from being a bit of a wet blanket (get it?) your blanket should work just fine after you spill something on it. In fact, many modern heated blankets can be totally submerged in water thanks to their waterproof insulation!

Does washing a heated blanket ruin it?

No, washing a modern heated blanket will not ruin it. Always check your blanket’s care tag before cleaning it, but most heated blankets can be machine washed without any issue.

How Do Murphy Beds Work?

Simply put, Murphy beds allow you to store your mattress vertically when you are not using it. This gives you more space to use the room for other activities when you are not using the bed.

Murphy beds work on a hinged system so that the bed folds down from the wall or Murphy bed frame. Some murphy beds contain springs or a hydraulic piston system to make it easier to pull down and put up your mattress.

Your weight and the weight of your mattress help keep the bed down during the night. In addition, some Murphy beds feature locking mechanisms to ensure they do not pop up unexpectedly.

Best Type Of Mattress For A Murphy Bed

Memory foam mattresses are usually the best fit for Murphy beds. They are usually thinner and hold their shape better when stored vertically. However, you want to make sure you find a more durable foam mattress that will not sag or bend too easily. A cheaper mattress could lose its shape while it is stored in a murphy bed.

Hybrid mattresses can work in Murphy beds, but they are not as good as memory foam mattresses. When coil mattresses are stored vertically, there is a chance the coils could start to bend and warp. Make sure to read your mattress warranty before pairing with a Murphy bed.

How To Install A Murphy Bed

There are a few different types of Murphy beds, and they have different installation processes. For instance, if the Murphy bed is not wall mounted, it’s as simple as building the Murphy bed based on the instructions and then pushing it against the wall.

However, even if the Murphy bed does not call for wall mounts, we still recommend using them. A stud finder will help you locate your load bearing wall beam. Then, using a drill and angle brackets, secure your Murphy bed to the wall. This will help prevent the Murphy bed from tipping forward.

Sometimes, getting quality sleep can be a challenge. That’s why Yana created the 360 body pillow.

Made with organic bamboo cotton, this ergonomic pillow gently hugs the body and offers exceptional support. But is it the right choice for you? Our Yana body pillow review will help you find out!

Yana 360 Pillow Overview

Though the Yana 360 body pillow can be used by everyone, pregnant individuals find it’s particularly useful. Customers can choose between two fillings: cooling gel and natural latex. For this review, we focused specifically on the 360 pillow filled with cooling gel foam.

Who Might Like the Yana 360

  • Pregnant people
  • Those who want a body pillow that won’t sag or lose its shape
  • People looking for a versatile pillow that supports many sleeping positions

Who Might Not Like the Yana 360

  • People who want a lightweight body pillow
  • Couples who share a small bed
  • People with tight budgets
Yana 360
Yana 360
Yana 360

The Yana 360 pillow is plush, supportive, and great for pregnant individuals.

Yana 360 Firmness and Feel

Now, let’s get into the important stuff – firmness and feel.

How Firm is the Yana 360 pillow?

The Yana 360 pillow feels supportive and firm, but it’s still flexible enough to be used in different sleeping positions. The dense filling offers excellent lumbar support, and it’s also plush enough to cradle a pregnant person’s belly.

Sleeping on the Yana 360 pillow

Because the Yana 360 pillow is so versatile, there are many ways you can use it! Here are some of the most comfortable ways to sleep with the Yana 360 pillow:

Side Sleeping

The Yana 360 pillow works well for side sleepers, especially if they need extra hip support. For the best results, place the arm of the Yana pillow in front of you and between your legs. Then, pull the other arm behind your back and lean against it for full-body support.

A woman sleeps on her side on the Yana 360 body pillow

Alternatively, you can place the Yana pillow in a traditional U-shape, where the curve of the pillow rests at your feet. You can place the arms of the pillow between your knees for adding cushioning, or you could simply cuddle with it.

Back Sleeping

If you’re a back sleeper, you can place the Yana pillow in a traditional U-shape, with the curve resting near your head. With one arm behind your back, you’ll get an extra boost of lumbar support.

You can also prop the Yana pillow against your headboard and relax in a reclined position – perfect for lounging before bed!

Stomach Sleeping

While we don’t recommend stomach sleeping on the Yana pillow overnight, brief naps in this position can help ease lower back pain – especially for pregnant people!

For this sleeping position, move the arms of the pillow into an “o” or “b” shape. Then, lie on top of the pillow and let your stomach rest within the round dome. After 15 minutes, you should feel some back pain relief!

What Does the Yana 360 Pillow Feel Like?

The Yana 360 pillow has a soft exterior and a dense filling. The cooling gel filling has more of a slow-moving feel when compared to the natural latex filling, but both options offer both comfort and support.

Yana 360 Pregnancy Pillow Review

The Yana 360 is a popular pillow for pregnant people who need a bit more comfort and support. To give you the most thorough review possible, we issued the help of my colleague Emylee Barjuca, who is an expectant mother at the time of writing.

Emylee’s Take

Overall, this pillow is an easy favorite, and I can understand the hype behind Yana. Despite the high ticket price, its high quality materials and firm yet contouring design more than justify the cost. After sleeping on the Yana pillow through my first and second trimesters, I quickly grew accustomed to the less “real estate” available on my mattress, especially while sharing the bed with my husband and getting the occasional night time snuggles from our tabby cat, Miso.

While I loved this pillow, there are a few things I think other sleepers might not like. First, there’s the issue of space. This pillow might not be the perfect match for you if you share a bed or have a mattress smaller than a queen. While I can snuggle up in the Yana pillow, feeling cozy in my cocoon, my partner felt like his precious mattress space was slipping away.

A woman lounges with the Yana 360 body pillow

Another consideration to keep in mind is the weight of the pillow. While a heavier pillow isn’t an issue while sleeping as it helps prevent shifting, it can be hard to adjust or move the pillow. There were a few nights in my second trimester where I woke up trying to move the pillow because it was difficult to adjust sleeping positions. Additionally, if my husband is already up and on his way to the gym, it can be more difficult to make the bed on my own and move the pillow on top of the comforter. As a result, there were many mornings when I draped my bedding over the pillow, leaving an odd U-shape lump under the covers (something that bothers me as one who likes a tidy home).

Yana 360 Pillow Construction

What’s this pillow made out of? Let’s take a look!

Cover

The Yana pillow comes with a removable, machine-washable cover made from a blend of bamboo, cotton, and polyester fabric.

Core

Customers can choose between two fillings: shredded cooling gel foam or shredded natural latex foam. Both options promote airflow and breathability.

Weight

Depending on when you purchase the pillow and which filling you choose, the Yana can weigh 10-16 lb.

Height/Loft

Loft is another way to describe a pillow’s height, and it’s particularly useful information to have when searching for a supportive body pillow. The Yana 360 is much loftier than others on the market, coming in at 8.15” tall. This makes it a great knee cushion or back rest. However, it may be too lofty to use as a head pillow because it could crane the neck out of alignment.

Yana 360 Size Options and Price

Yana 360 Pillow Performance

We aren’t done yet! We also need to look at Yana’s performance features. Keep reading to learn more!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

No matter which filling you choose, the Yana pillow should sleep cool at night. The gel foam helps dissipate body heat, and the shredded latex feels naturally responsive and breathable. The Yana shouldn’t contribute to night sweats!

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing simply means that a product emits a slight chemical smell after it’s unboxed. The Yana pillow has a 48-hour off-gassing period. It looks compressed and wrinkly at first, but after two days, it should smell fresh and look fluffy.

Care Instructions

The Yana pillow has a removable, machine-washable cover that’s easy to care for. Simply wash with gentle detergent, and you’re good to go! It’s important to note, however, that only the outer cover is machine washable. The interior shell can only be spot-cleaned, and the pillow itself is too bulky for a standard washing machine.

Allergies

Yana pillows are OEKO-TEX100 certified, which means they meet the highest health and safety standards. Folks with severe latex allergies may want to opt for the shredded gel foam filling, though we don’t anticipate the latex filling to ever come in contact with skin.

Company Policies

It’s always wise to read the company policies before making a big purchase. Here’s what you can expect if you order a pillow from Yana Sleep.

Warranty Info

The Yana 360 pillow is not backed by a warranty.

Sleep Trial

Yana does not offer a sleep trial period.

Return Policy

Yana offers full refunds for returns made within 45 days of purchasing, but only if the product has been unopened and unused. After the first 45 days, Yana offers a partial refund for unopened products.

Common Yana Pillow Complaints

The Yana pillow has tons of favorable customer reviews, but some folks complained about the pillow’s weight. Unlike many body pillows on the market, the Yana is filled with durable and dense materials. This is great for folks who need additional lumbar support, but some people had difficulty moving and adjusting the pillow.

How Does Yana Compare To Other Pillows?

We know how difficult it can be to buy a pillow without testing it first. To make things easier, we’ll compare the Yana Sleep pillow with two other popular products: the Leecho Snoogle and Tuft & Needle body pillow.

Yana vs Leachco Snoogle

There are many significant differences between the Yana and Leachco Snoogle. Most notably, they have different shapes. The Yana makes a U-shape, with a thicker piece toward the top. The Leachco is shaped like a thin “C,” and it has more of a soft, plush feel.

If you need more lumbar support, Yana is the better choice. The Yana pillow is quite heavy, however, so if you prefer something more lightweight you may want to opt for the Leachco.

a woman presses into the Leachco Snoogle pregnancy pillow

The Leachco isn’t as big as the Yana, so it won’t wrap around the whole body. This pillow does come at a lower price point, though, so it may work for people with tight budgets.

Who Should Get the Yana Pillow

  • People who want a more supportive body pillow
  • Those who want a bigger pillow
  • Folks who want a pillow that can wrap around their whole body

Who Should Get the Leachco Snoogle

  • People who want to save money
  • People who want a softer pillow
  • Those who want a lightweight pillow

Read our full Leachco Snoogle review.

Yana vs Tuft & Needle

Unlike the Yana, the Tuft & Needle body pillow doesn’t have a curved shape. Instead, it’s shaped like a long head pillow, or a lowercase “L.” This makes it a good choice for folks who want something soft to snuggle with, but it may not work as well for pregnant folks who need more lumbar support.

A woman sleeps on her side with the Tuft & Needle body pillow

The Tuft & Needle pillow contains a down alternative fill, so it’s particularly soft and malleable. The Yana pillow, on the other hand, feels supportive and dense.

Who Should Get The Yana Pillow

  • Pregnant people who need more hip and back support
  • Folks who want a heavier pillow
  • Those who want a U-shape pillow that can wrap around their entire body

Who Should Get the Tuft & Needle Body Pillow

  • People who prefer pillows with a light and malleable feel
  • People who want to save money
  • Those who want a long pillow shaped like a lowercase “l”

FAQs

Still have questions? We won’t leave you hanging. Check out our FAQ section below.

How do I wash my Yana pillow?

The Yana pillow has a machine-washable cover. For the best results, wash with mild detergent on a gentle cycle. The interior shell is spot-clean only, and the pillow core is not machine-washable.

Are pregnancy pillows necessary?

Pregnancy pillows aren’t necessary, but they can help alleviate the pain that often accompanies pregnancy. Maternity pillows can also help people change their sleeping position. Once pregnant people reach the second trimester, doctors recommend they start sleeping on their sides. Thick body pillows can act as a buffer and encourage pregnant people to remain in the ideal sleeping position throughout the night.

Which pillow is best for pregnancy?

There are so many pregnancy pillows on the market, but if you’re looking for a heavy and supportive option, Yana is a great choice. This large pillow can be used in many different ways, which is particularly helpful for pregnant individuals. If you need more ideas, though, check out our full list of the best pregnancy pillows.

If you toss and turn during the night and find yourself with the corners popping up as you do so, your fitted sheet might not have deep pockets. Some mattresses are just too tall for the average fitted sheet to stay firmly on your bed.

I’ve tested some of the best deep pocket sheets out there and put them all in a convenient list. No need to fight with your fitted sheet while you sleep. Let’s dive into the list!

Our Top Picks for the Best Deep Pocket Sheets

Editor’s Pick

Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton Sheets

A man sleeps with the Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton sheets. The average mattress ranges from 8” to 14” tall. Deep pocket sheets can range from 13” to 17” deep, and our favorite deep pocket sheets have pockets that come in at 17”, the Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton sheets!

True to the name, these sheets blend cotton and bamboo. They feel slightly crisp because of the cotton, but the bamboo addition makes them feel very soft and smooth. If you’ve never tried bamboo sheets before, this is a good way to test it out as most people are familiar with cotton sheets.

Brooklyn Bedding sells these in a limited color palette, but they’re all neutral and should match any color scheme. And when these sheets go on a holiday discount, they can be very affordable, too!

What Makes the Brooklyn Bedding Sheets Stand Out?

  • The fitted sheet fits mattresses up to 17” tall.
  • Cotton and bamboo together make for a very breathable set of sheets.
  • They’re a good option for people who are familiar with cotton but want to try a new material.

If you're a cotton sheet lover who wants to venture into bamboo, the Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton sheets are the bamboo/cotton blend you need. They're still crisp like cotton sheets, but have that satin-like feel that bamboo sheets are known for.

Best Extra Deep Pockets

Helix Tencel Sheets

The Helix Tencel Sheet Set Spread out on a bed. Most deep pocket sheets fall in the 17” range, but Helix makes a set of Tencel sheets that have some truly deep pockets: they’re 22” deep. That’s almost two feet!

These sheets feature a material called Tencel, which is made from eucalyptus trees. This is a good eco-friendly option, as eucalyptus requires less water to grow than some other plants. It’s breathable and moisture-wicking, so you shouldn’t sleep hot on these sheets either.

They feel a little more weighty than other Tencel sheets I’ve encountered, but they still feel very comfortable to use. And with such deep pockets, you won’t have to worry about the corners popping up during the night.

What Makes the Helix Tencel Sheets Stand Out?

  • They have some of the deepest pockets I’ve encountered, coming in at 22” deep.
  • Tencel is breathable, moisture-wicking, and cool to the touch for hot sleepers.
  • You have 100 nights to test them out, and Helix offers a 3-year warranty.

Best Queen-Size

Saatva Organic Sateen Sheets

Saatva uses cotton that has been Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, which is the highest standard for organic cotton that is eco-friendly and responsibly sourced. This cotton is woven with the sateen weave, which makes them feel super soft and satin-like.

They only come in white, but that makes them look very elegant on your bed. And with a lower thread count of 300, and cotton’s natural breathability, they won’t trap heat for you hot sleepers out there.

What Makes the Saatva Organic Sateen Sheets Stand Out?

  • The sateen weave makes them feel luxuriously soft.
  • Saatva uses 100% organic cotton that’s eco-friendly and responsibly sourced.
  • Cotton is very lightweight and breathable, making them a good option for hot sleepers.

Birch Organic Sheets

Birch Sheets - side sleepingAny company can use cotton in its sheets, but getting the cotton certified organic, eco-friendly, and responsibly sourced makes the cotton stand out. Birch is a brand that’s dedicated to using natural materials in its sleep products, and the cotton in the Birch Organic sheets is no different.

It has been GOTS certified, meeting the highest standards for organic cotton. And these are some of the softest, almost buttery smooth cotton sheets I’ve encountered. That’s thanks to the sateen weave Birch uses to construct these sheets.

The fitted sheet has pockets that are 15” deep, putting them firmly in the deep pocket category. You also have five natural or light shade colors to pick from for a bit of variety.

What Makes the Birch Organic Sheets Stand Out?

  • The cotton is 100% organic and is eco-friendly.
  • The sateen weave is buttery soft and smooth.

But it’s also super soft, which is what Oprah said about the Cozy Earth Bamboo sheets. With an endorsement like that, how could anyone not look into these sheets?!

Cozy Earth’s bamboo fitted sheets have pockets that are 18” deep, which should allow the fitted sheet to stay firmly attached to your mattress. Cozy Earth mentions that the corners can stretch to cover mattresses up to 20″ tall as well.

Another set constructed with the sateen weave, they feel soft and satin-like, making you feel like you’re sleeping in true luxury. And there are a few shade options ranging from white to gray, and two recent additions of olive green and navy to give color lovers some options.

What Makes the Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheets Stand Out?

  • These sheets feel luxuriously soft thanks to the bamboo.
  • The fitted sheet can fit mattresses up to 20” tall.
  • They come in a few white and gray shades for people looking for options.

Best Cooling

Puffy Bamboo Sheets

A man is about to climb into a bed that is dressed with the Puffy Bamboo sheets. As a hot sleeper myself, bamboo sheets were a game changer. And when I encountered the Puffy Bamboo sheets, it was love at first sleep. So much so that I took the set home after I reviewed them and kept them for myself!

Bamboo is a fantastic material for cooling because it’s breathable and moisture-wicking, meaning you won’t sleep hot and sweaty with these sheets. And thanks to the sateen weave, they feel very soft and silky, but also cozy for when the winter months come around.

The fitted sheet has pockets that are 15” deep, and in my experience, I’ve never had an issue with them popping up during the night.

What Makes the Puffy Bamboo Sheets Stand Out?

  • Bamboo is a very good option for hot sleepers: It’s breathable and moisture wicking.
  • Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic.
  • Puffy offers a long trial period to test the sheets out and a lifetime warranty if you keep them.

Best Flannel

Brooklinen Brushed Flannel Sheets

The Brooklinen Flannle Core Sheet Set pieces displayed on a mattress. For those that live in cooler climates, or get cold quickly, flannels are the perfect cozy sheets to keep you warm. Brooklinen calls itself “the Internet’s favorite sheets” and it’s really not hard to see why. The brand makes a high-quality set of flannel sheets.

The cotton used for these flannel sheets has been brushed, which gives it a slightly fuzzy, but very soft and cozy feel when you pull them over. No need to layer up with these sheets. Brooklinen sells these in some classic plaid color options that we associate with flannels.

The fitted sheet has pockets that are 15” deep. And you’ll have an entire year to test out these sheets and make exchanges if they don’t work out for you.

What Makes the Brooklinen Flannel Sheets Stand Out?

  • Flannels are great for wintertime or for colder climates.

Best Percale

Tuft & Needle Percale Sheets

Tuft & Needle Sheets OverviewThere are two main types of weave styles: percale and sateen. The sateen weave has been mentioned a few times throughout this list, but my favorite set of percale sheets that have deep pockets come from Tuft & Needle.

The percale weave leaves sheets feeling very crisp and looking matte on your bed. The best way to describe them is the feeling of a fresh, pressed button down shirt. This is that classic cotton crispness cotton lovers are used to.

The 16” pockets are what lands them on this list! This is great on its own, but to make things even better, Tuft & Needle uses an extra strong elastic in the fitted sheet to ensure that it stays firmly on your bed.

What Makes the Tuft & Needle Percale Sheets Stand Out?

  • The percale weave makes them feel very crisp and leaves them with lots of room for airflow.
  • They come in five neutral colors.
  • Tuft & Needle uses Supima cotton, which is much more durable than standard cotton, so they should last you a good while.

Best King-Size

Boll & Branch Percale Sheets

A man sleeps on his side with the Boll & Branch Percale Hemmed Sheets. For those who sleep with a partner or just want to sleep like a king with a king-size mattress, the Boll & Branch sheets are for you. These sheets feature 17” deep pockets in the fitted sheet, securing them to your bed. After all, on a king-size bed, putting those corners back down is quite a hassle in the middle of the night.

Thanks to the percale weave, these cotton sheets feel very crisp, but they won’t trap heat thanks to Boll & Branch’s cooling weave. This cotton has also been ethically sourced and is a good option for the eco-conscious shoppers out there.

What Makes the Boll & Branch Percale Sheets Stand Out?

  • Boll & Branch sources Fair Trade, GOTS and OEKO-Tex certified cotton to ensure eco-friendly and responsible production.
  • The combination of breathable cotton and Boll & Branch’s signature cooling weave means they won’t trap heat.
  • The fitted sheet fits mattresses 17” tall.

Best Affordable

Pizuna Classic Sheets

A man sleeps on his side with the Pizuna Sheets. Some of the sheets on this list are certainly considered luxury picks, but if you’re prioritizing budget over luxury, look at Pizuna. This bedding company sells a wide range of sheets, but I’ll focus on the brand’s classic set with the 400 thread count.

Pizuna offers this set in many different colors, and the fitted sheet has 15” deep pockets to fit comfortably on the average bed. They feel silky smooth thanks to the sateen weave. But the best part about these sheets is Pizuna offers some mighty discounts that bring a queen-size set under $60.

What Makes the Pizuna Sheets Stand Out?

  • Pizuna is dedicated to affordability: A queen set will not cost more than about $60 when discounted.
  • They come in a wide variety of color and thread count options.
  • The sateen weave makes them feel very soft and satin-like.

What Are Deep Pocket Sheets?

Deep pocket sheets are fairly self-explanatory. These pockets are located in the corners of the fitted sheets and can fit around tall mattresses. The average mattress height can vary from 8” to 14”. If you have a bed on the taller end, deep pocket sheets become much more important to consider.

Purple SoftStretch Sheets Corner

The main goal of deep pocket sheets is to ensure that the fitted sheet can fit on your mattress comfortably. If you tend to toss and turn like I do, and your fitted sheet doesn’t have deep enough pockets, those corners can pop off during the night. This means you’ll either have to fix them in the middle of the night, disrupting your sleep, or add an extra step to making your bed in the morning.

How Deep are Deep Pocket Sheets?

If you have a taller mattress, pay close attention to your fitted sheet. The range for deep pockets is anywhere from 13” to 17”, but the goal here is to make sure that the fitted sheet can fit your mattress, and fit it comfortably.

A close up of the corner pocket of the Puffy Bamboo sheets.

Allow yourself about two inches when looking at your mattress height to fitted sheet ratio. So, for example, if your bed is 13” tall, find sheets that are at least 15” deep. Adjust accordingly based on your mattress’s height, and take note that a mattress topper will change your mattress’s height.

The good news is that all the sheets on this list range from 15” to 17”, with two exceptions: Cozy Earth and Helix, which offer 20” and 22” respectively.

Regular vs Deep Pocket Sheets

Regular Deep Pocket
7” – 12” in height 13” – 17” in height
Good for beds that range around 8” – 10” tall Good for beds that range around 11” to 14” tall.
Have less fabric and could be more affordable Use more fabric so might have a higher price tag

FAQs

Can you use deep pocket sheets on a regular mattress?

Truthfully, yes you can. But you should keep your mattress height in mind when looking for sheets. For average height mattresses, say around 8” to 10” tall, deep pockets might not be the best option. They could be too big and bunch in areas, and you could get tangled in your sheets. But if you have an average height mattress and are using a mattress topper, deep pockets are the way to go.

Do I need deep pocket sheets?

How tall your bed is will determine if you need deep pocket sheets. If you have a shorter mattress, stick with standard sheets. If your mattress is taller, or you’ve added a mattress topper, deep pockets are the best option for you.

Minocasa Hybrid Mattress Overview

Minocasa is a bedding brand that offers high-quality sheets, comforters, and pillows. The brand currently offers the Minocasa Hybrid, a mattress that boasts zoned coils, multiple layers of high-density foam, and a cooling cover. Even with all these features, the Minocasa is more affordable than other hybrid mattresses on the market.

In my experience, the Minocasa Hybrid has a lot to offer, but it will be more comfortable depending on your sleeping position and firmness preferences.

Who Should Get The Minocasa Hybrid Mattress?

  • Those looking for an affordable mattress
  • Stomach sleepers
  • Fans of firm mattresses

Who Shouldn’t Get The Minocasa Hybrid Mattress?

  • Fans of a slow-moving memory foam feel
  • Side sleepers
  • Those who want a soft mattress

Minocasa Hybrid Firmness and Feel

Let’s start off by talking about firmness and feel. This will give you an initial idea of what sleeping positions the Minocasa Hybrid will work best for.

How Firm Is The Minocasa Hybrid Mattress?

On a scale of 1-10, the Minocasa Hybrid has a firmness of 7/10. The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5, so the Minocasa Hybrid is just firmer than average.

The top layer of the Minocasa Hybrid is soft, but the rest of the foam layers are on the firmer end. Combined with the coils, these layers give the Minocasa a firmer feel. Also, the coils are zoned, so the mattress will feel firmer when you are back and stomach sleeping and softer when you are side sleeping.

Sleeping On The Minocasa Hybrid Mattress

Starting off back sleeping on the Minocasa Hybrid, the mattress gave me a great balance of comfort and support. My hips sunk into the top layers of foam, and I experienced a bit of contouring as well.

Side sleeping, the Minocasa Hybrid was too firm, and I felt some bunching up around my shoulders and hips. Most side sleepers will want to find a softer mattress overall.

Being a firmer mattress, the Minocasa Hybrid was a decent match for stomach sleeping. The bed’s zoning provided more support under my hips, and this is very important for stomach sleeping. Without that support, your hips could sink forward and take your spine out of alignment.

A man sleeps on his stomach on the Minocasa Hybrid mattress.

What Does The Minocasa Hybrid Mattress Feel Like?

The Minocasa Hybrid features a responsive, hybrid mattress feel. The coils and foams are bouncy and make it very easy to move around and change positions. While the top layer is slightly soft, you won’t sink too far into the mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back sleepers should enjoy sleeping on the Minocasa Hybrid mattress. They should feel the zoned coils providing extra lumbar support, while the top foam layers provide enough comfort.

Side sleepers in this weight range won’t get the best pressure relief from the Minocasa Hybrid. The comfort layer is not soft enough to prevent a bunched up feeling around the shoulders and hips.

Average weight stomach sleepers will get enough support on the Minocasa Hybrid. They shouldn’t feel their hips sinking down into the mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavyweight back sleepers who weigh closer to 230 will experience good support on the Minocasa Hybrid mattress. Those who weigh 300 lb or more will want to find a more supportive mattress that can handle their extra weight.

Heavyweight side sleepers may experience better pressure relief than average weight and lightweight side sleepers. Their added weight will compress the high-density foam layers, so the Minocasa Hybrid will feel softer to them.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers who weigh under 300 lb will get all the support they require, but heavyweight stomach sleepers over 300 lb won’t get enough support. They should consider one of our best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

If you weigh less than 130 lb, the Minocasa Hybrid might feel too firm for back sleeping. You could feel the mattress push your hips outward, and this will feel quite uncomfortable. Lightweight side sleepers will also feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips, but lightweight stomach sleepers will experience good support.

Minocasa Hybrid Mattress Construction

Now, let’s look under the cover of the Minocasa Hybrid and see how the layers work.

Cover

The Minocasa Hybrid features a soft Tencel cover. It is designed to promote airflow and keep you cool during the night.

Comfort Layers

First, the Minocasa Hybrid features gel memory foam that offers a bit of pressure relief. The gel infusion prevents the memory foam from trapping body heat.

Below that, there are two layers of pressure-relieving foam that help transition you from the top comfort layer down to the supportive coils.

A side shot of the Minocasa Hybrid mattress

Support Layer

The Minocasa Hybrid contains individually-wrapped coils in its support layer. The coils are zoned so that the center of the mattress feels firmer. This is intended to keep your spine neutrally-aligned when you lie down.

Mattress Height

The mattress is 12” tall.

Minocasa Hybrid Size Options and Price

Look at the following chart for the most up-to-date size and price options.

Minocasa Hybrid Mattress Performance

I put the Minocasa Hybrid mattress to the test with regard to cooling and motion transfer. Let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Minocasa Hybrid is a cooler sleeping mattress. Its coils promote airflow through the bottom part of the mattress, and the top foam layer features a cooling infusion. Add in a breathable cover, and you should not be sleeping hot on the Minocasa Hybrid.

Motion Transfer

If you sleep with a partner, you want to keep motion transfer in mind. This occurs when one partner moves around on their side of the mattress, and this motion disturbs the other partner on their side of the mattress.

When I tested the Minocasa Hybrid for motion transfer, it performed well. I did not see too much motion transfer from one side of the mattress to the other. I also lay down and asked my coworker to roll around on the other side. Their movements did not disturb me.

This should be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support is also important for couples to consider. If your mattress features good edge support, it will allow you and your partner to sleep all the way toward the edges without falling off. This will give you more surface area to work with.

The Minocasa Hybrid boasted some solid edge support. It has a reinforced edge, so I felt secure sitting and lying down near the edge.

A man sits near the edge of the Minocasa Hybrid mattress.

Durability

The Minocasa Hybrid contains some high-density foam and high-grade coils as well. Based on its construction, the Mincoasa Hybrid should last for at least seven years.

Off-gassing

When you unbox a new online mattress, you may notice a slight chemical smell. This is called off-gassing, and it is normal with bed-in-a-box mattresses.

I noticed some off-gassing with the Minocasa Hybrid, but I left the mattress in a well-ventilated room, and it lost the smell within 48 hours.

Noise

The Minocasa Hybrid made no noise when I rolled around and got in and out of bed. However, some hybrid mattresses start to squeak after a few years. Keep this in mind if you are worried about your mattress being too noisy.

Sex

If you want a good mattress for sex, find something that is responsive and makes it easy to move around on. The Minocasa Hybrid fits the bill as it is bouncy and will not make you feel stuck.

And if you want a set of sheets that feel cool-to-the-touch while also being breathable and moisture-wicking, the Serta Arctic sheets are for you.

These sheets feature a blend of Tencel lyocell, CoolMax polyester, and cooling nylon. This triple blend of fabrics will work to keep you cool all night. Tencel is a material derived from eucalyptus, and it’s very breathable and moisture-wicking.

Serta only sells these in white, but they look very cool (pun intended) on your bed. So say goodbye to night sweats with these sheets. Sleeping hot isn’t luxurious anyway.

What Makes the Serta Arctic Sheets Stand Out?

  • Tencel lyocell is a great option for hot sleepers: it’s cool-to-the-touch, breathable, and moisture-wicking.

Boll & Branch uses long-staple cotton, which means the cotton fibers have been made into long, but durable fibers. These threads have been woven into the sateen weave, which makes these sheets feel very soft and satin-like. The cotton is 100% organic, and has been ethically sourced.

The fitted sheet has deep pockets that can fit mattresses up to 17” tall, so they do a good job of staying on your bed. Cotton is good for breathability as well, so hot sleepers should sleep comfortably with these sheets.

Best Luxury Egyptian Cotton

Parachute Percale

Parachute-percale-sheets-on-bedEgyptian cotton is marketed as the most luxurious type of cotton. And this marketing is based in fact. Egyptian cotton is able to be spun into finer threads, which makes it much softer than standard cotton. Parachute uses Egyptian cotton in its percale set, and that’s why they’re our favorite luxury Egyptian cotton sheets.

Though the percale weave used to make these sheets gives them a crispness, the Egyptian cotton gives them a good amount of smoothness, too. They feel very lightweight, and shouldn’t trap heat.

Because Egyptian cotton is more durable, these sheets should be a worthy investment for their luxury. Parachute even recognizes this and offers a 3-year warranty!

What Makes the Parachute Percale Sheets Stand Out?

  • Egyptian cotton feels much softer and is more durable than standard cotton.
  • Parachute offers a 3-year warranty so they should last you at least that long.
  • They come in a variety of neutral shades for color options.

What Makes a Sheet Luxurious?

Marketing will have you believe that a high thread count set of sheets is the most luxurious thing in the world. Well, I’m here to bust that myth. Thread count influences how soft a set of sheets feels, and how breathable they are. But high thread count doesn’t always mean luxury.

For me, the phrase “the best luxury sheets” really means what kind of materials a brand uses, how they’re constructed, and if the brand goes through certification processes. Bamboo, organic, long-staple cotton, Egyptian cotton, and linens are materials that can be made to feel very luxurious.

With the exception of linens, cotton and bamboo can be made into the sateen weave. This weave style feels luxuriously soft, buttery smooth, and almost like satin. The other style, the percale weave, feels very crisp and lightweight. It can feel very luxurious, too, but most of the sheets on this list feature the sateen weave.

FAQs

What’s the most luxurious thread count for sheets?

Though thread count isn’t an indicator of high quality sheets, higher thread count sheets will feel much softer and cozy. We have a full article detailing what’s the best thread count for sheets, but in a nutshell, around 800 to 1,000 is a good option for high thread count lovers.

Some brands do have sheets that go up to 2,000, but I’d steer clear of them. Sheets with a thread count that high can be artificially inflated, as the company could be using multi-ply threads that use two or three fibers within a single thread.

What type of sheets do luxury hotels use?

When it comes to luxury hotels, durability plays a big role. Though many sheets feature the luxuriously soft sateen weave, luxury hotels will opt for the more durable percale style sheets.

These feel very crisp and will resist pilling much better than sateen weave sheets. Pilling tends to happen more in sateen weave sheets, and will happen quicker when washed as frequently as hotels do.

Are luxury sheets worth it?

In a word, yes! Some sheets might be an investment, but in the case of Cozy Earth, some luxury sheets are designed for longevity. Cozy Earth recognizes this and offers a 10-year warranty so they should last that long with good care.

What goes into the price of luxury sheets?

There are two big considerations that go into pricing sheets (and it’s not thread count!): materials and certifications. Egyptian cotton has to be grown in Egypt to be considered as such, and manufacturers need to import this material, which drives up the price.

Many brands will also get certifications on sheets to ensure that they are eco-friendly and have responsible production. Getting these certifications are intensive and not cheap.

Most people sleep on the couch from time to time. Whether you want to escape a snoring partner or watch another episode of your favorite show, you may find yourself unintentionally snoozing on the couch. Though doing so occasionally can be harmless, when it becomes a regular habit, it can lead to less than optimal sleep. However, for some, sleeping on the couch can actually alleviate certain concerns. Below, we’ll unpack the scenarios where sleeping on the couch can be either harmful or helpful.

Is it Bad to Sleep on the Couch?

You may find yourself sleeping on the couch when you can’t fall asleep in your own bed. But the couch can create its own set of sleep problems, from aches and pains to restless sleep. Many couches are located in a living room and face a TV. If you fall asleep with the TV on, you increase your exposure to added light and radiant sound. Both keep you from getting into the deeper and more restorative stages of sleep.

Research shows blue light can be detrimental to our health. Exposure to blue light at night, even dim light, can disrupt your circadian rhythm by suppressing the secretion of melatonin, which promotes sleep.

Ambient sound, like white noise from a sound machine, can help some people fall or stay asleep. This is because the frequencies of the tones are all equal, which promotes relaxation. A television’s sound is variable in pitch, tempo, and volume — this can wake you during the night without you even remembering it.

Sleep posture on a couch can also be less than ideal. Couches are often narrower and shorter than beds, and they have not been engineered to bear the entire weight of our bodies in supine position. While sleeping on a couch, you may find yourself unable to stretch out or position yourself comfortably. Precarious sleeping positions can lead to chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain.

A man sleeps on his couch.

Benefits Couch Sleeping

If you do end up wanting to or having to sleep on the couch, it’s a good idea to prop pillows against the arm rests (if your couch has them). This can help elevate your head while sleeping, and pillows can better support your torso and chest. Elevating your head can also help reduce stuffiness in the sinuses for those suffering from  congestion. And for folks who are up all night coughing with a cold, raising your head  will help to diminish the post-nasal drip that causes more coughing. Learn more in our How to Sleep When You’re Sick article.

If you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the throat muscles become lax and create a choking-like effect while you’re sleeping, elevating your body from the waist up will alleviate pressure on the airway and may help you breathe easier while you sleep. Situating your pillows on the sofa comfortably under your lumbar and cervical spine can be helpful for OSA. Additionally, many people who suffer from insomnia find that moving to the couch can help them sleep because it offers a change of scenery from the bedroom, which they may associate with the stress of not sleeping.

Drawbacks of Sleeping on the Couch

After a night or two on the couch, you may develop neck pain that can’t seem to be kneaded away. Chronic back and neck pain can be pernicious, and sleeping on a couch can exacerbate these issues. Sofas were not designed for sleeping like mattresses are, and they do not offer enough support to keep the spine in proper alignment.

Couches are also difficult to clean. From dog hair to dropped crumbs of food hiding behind the cushions, you will be exposed to more allergens and germs when you sleep on your couch than you will in your bed, where you wash your bedding regularly.

Sleeping on the couch can be habit forming, especially for those who make a routine of  falling asleep in front of the TV, or for folks who struggle with insomnia and have associated their bedrooms with not sleeping.

Tips for Sleeping on the Couch

Practice good sleep hygiene. Unplug all electronics and keep the room as dark as  possible by turning the TV off and using blackout blinds if possible. Wear a sleep mask if there is still a lot of radiant lighting in the room.

Dress your couch with sheets, a comforter, and proper pillows. Behave as if your couch is your bed by taking time before you fall asleep to arrange the  pillows well so that you won’t wake up with added aches and pains.

Keep the room thermostat below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. You may want to consider sleeping in the nude to help with temperature control.

Practice a healthy night-time routine. That may involve a warm bath, or stretching in low light to set the mood for good sleep.

FAQs

Why do I sleep better on the couch?

If you suffer from insomnia, or your mattress is uncomfortable, you may get better sleep  on your couch in the short term, especially if you find it comfy. But in the long run, you  should invest in a better mattress and create a more tranquil environment in your  bedroom to help you sleep better each night.

Can sleeping on the couch cause back pain?

Yes, if you have a body that is longer or wider than your couch, or a sofa that is saggy  and unsupportive, you can certainly end up with back and neck pain from sleeping  there. Sleeping on the couch is less than optimal for the health of your back. Choose a firm mattress that will offer optimal spinal support for a good night sleep.

Is it better to sleep on a couch or bed?

It is best to sleep in your bed for a good night’s sleep because mattresses are designed  to balance out the weight of your body in a horizontal position, while a sofa is designed to support you while seated.

When it comes to sleep, the more relaxed you are, the better your sleep. Trying to sleep with a bloated stomach can cause distress for even the best or heaviest sleepers. However, finding a comfortable sleeping position can make a big difference in alleviating some of the tightness and pressure associated with a bloated stomach. Read on to learn more.

What Causes Bloating in the Stomach?

A bloated stomach is caused from intestinal gas, which is a natural byproduct of digestion. Too much intestinal gas can create digestive disturbance, pressure, tightness and a full feeling. Those with food sensitivities and gastrointestinal issues are more likely to experience bloating.

A bloated stomach can be noticeably distended, but it can also have no outwardly visible symptoms. Either way, it can be uncomfortable and if it occurs at night, it can inhibit sleep. Bloating is also quite common. One study found that 96% of IBS sufferers report bloating and gut distention, 20-30% of the general population suffer from bloating regularly, and 75% of women who menstruate report bloating before or during their period.

Causes of a bloated stomach include:

• Hormonal fluctuations

• Digestive issues: SIBO, IBS, Functional dyspepsia

• Food intolerances

• Diet: eating too much food at one time, fizzy drinks, sugar, salt, not enough fiber, or eating too fast

• Constipation

• Weight gain

• Bowel obstructions

• Motility disorders like pelvic floor dysfunction

How to Get Rid of a Bloated Stomach

A bloated stomach can leave you feeling uncomfortable and unable to sleep. There are remedies that can help ease a gassy and bloated stomach, including prescription medication, over the counter (OTC) medication, and natural treatments. Some therapies are more effective when targeting the issue on the spot, while other treatments are more useful for long-term relief. Those who suffer from IBS and other chronic conditions will need long-term solutions.

Examples of Quick Remedies for a Bloated Stomach

• In two controlled trials, peppermint oil noticeably reduced bloating and distention. Essential oils and herbs like peppermint are antispasmodics and can help your intestinal muscles relax so that you can pass gas more easily.

• Herbal teas such as peppermint, fennel, lemon balm, chamomile, and ginger have an antispasmodic affect. Drink them after a meal, or sip throughout the day, to help better digest your food and remedy gas and bloating after a meal.

• Dandelion tea has a wonderful bitter flavor like coffee, and it is a diuretic, so it will help to reduce water retention. It’s specifically good for women who suffer from cyclical bloating related to their periods.

• Magnesium oxide has been shown to help relieve constipation. Apart from having a natural laxative effect, magnesium also helps to relax the intestinal muscles and neutralize stomach acid.

• Baths can help reduce bloating. Add some Epsom salts to your bath for a double whammy. Both the warm water and the magnesium in the salts will help provide relief for a bloated abdomen, and the added temperature regulation will help you sleep.

• Activated charcoal can be helpful for those who are looking for some quick relief. When activated charcoal comes into contact with stomach gas, it traps the gas molecules into tiny gaps found on the charcoal’s surface. This essentially locks the gas away safely and allows it to be passed smoothly in a normal digestive process.

• Antacids, like Tums, are calcium carbonate, a substance that helps to neutralize stomach acid. It also encourages belching or flatulence.

• Simethicone, like Alka-Seltzer, is an anti-foaming agent that decreases inflammation and discomfort from bloating caused by gas.

• A combination of activated charcoal, simethicone, and magnesium oxide were shown to be more effective together than each one singularly with patients who suffer from functional dyspepsia.

Long Term Remedies for Bloating

• Rule out a serious health issue

• Eat a low-FODMAP diet (a diet that is low in inflammatory sugars) or try an elimination diet for 30 days

• Prebiotics and probiotics will help balance your gut flora, which will help you digest and metabolize food more sufficiently. They also help regulate colon bacteria that can produce gas and cause bloating.

• Turmeric from the curcumin longa plant has been shown to have a significant positive effect on abdominal pain and discomfort with IBS patients.

• Increase dietary fiber gradually by getting a daily intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, and soluble and insoluble fibers.

• Castor oil can help control symptoms related to constipation and decrease bloating.

• Getting adequate exercise and gentle stretching before bed each night can help decrease stress and assist the digestive tract in processing the food.

Best Sleeping Positions for a Bloated Stomach

Side Sleeping

Side sleeping is a great position to choose if you are suffering from stomach distress and bloating. Although there is little research to support the benefits of sleeping on one side vs another, a study from the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology showed people with acid reflux issues had a higher incidence when they slept on the right side verses the left. However, people with congestive heart failure felt more comfortable when they slept on their right side because this position seems to reduce pressure on the heart muscles by creating more space in the chest cavity.

Left Side Sleeping

Left side sleeping is often regarded as better for digestion and a bloated stomach. Gravity and physiology are both at play in this position, since the stomach is positioned on the left side of the body. Gravity can help waste move with greater ease through the digestive tract from the small intestine to the large intestine. This can help to ease discomfort from gas and bloating and other digestive discomforts.

Side Sleeping with a Pillow Between the Legs

Using a pillow between your knees can be a life-changing addition to your sleep hygiene. It can make side sleeping much more comfortable by keeping the hips and lower spine in proper alignment.

Back Sleeping

Back sleeping can be helpful to ease pain because it distributes the weight of the body evenly and helps keep the spine in a stable neutral position. But it is not ideal for folks who are overweight, pregnant, or suffer from back pain.

Back Sleeping With a Pillow Under Your Knees

If you don’t have a supportive mattress, you could try to elevate your legs using a stable pillow under your knees. This will help take pressure off of your lower back and allow the stomach to spread, relax, and relieve some gas.

Back Sleeping with an Elevated Head and Torso

If your stomach bloating is caused from acid reflux or GERD, or you are a snorer, back sleeping could be detrimental for your sleep, unless you also elevate your head and chest. This will help keep the sinuses clear and reduce snoring. It will also make it more difficult for the acid to inch back toward your throat.

Worst Sleeping Position for a Bloated Stomach

Stomach sleeping is considered to be the worst sleeping position for many people, including those suffering from indigestion or a bloated stomach. This position exerts extra pressure on the stomach and create strain on the neck and shoulders. When you lie on your stomach, the weight of your body is naturally pressed deeper into the mattress and puts more strain on your lower back. Stomach sleeping can create even more stress on the bloated stomach. If you must sleep on your stomach, because of habit, be sure you have a low loft pillow so that your spine isn’t tossed out of alignment.

How Sleep Impacts Gut Health and Digestion

Research that looked at the quality of sleep over an extended period of one month showed that a diverse gut microbiome promoted healthier sleep through the gut brain microbiome axis (GBMA). The GBMA is bi-directional, so psychological state (including sleep) can alter gut health as much as gut bacteria can influence health and habits. This study also pointed to specific bacteria that are present in the gut, which are associated with healthier sleep and helping regulate circadian rhythm.

Sleep disturbances such as insomnia, shorter sleep times, and frequent sleep awakenings are common among people who suffer with IBS. Poor sleep quality and quantity has been associated with several illnesses, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. These diseases can create an inadequate gut microbiome composition, which can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation.

There is a clear link between poor sleep and the gut microbiome. Lack of sleep can create a cascade of issues ranging from hormonal imbalances to a lack of diverse and robust gut flora. Gut health should be top of mind when trying to improve your sleep hygiene. Digestive issues including bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, constipation are all intimately related to our gut microbiome.

Is It Bad to Eat Before Bed?

Most experts recommend eating no fewer than three hours before bed so that your body has time to digest the food properly. However, you should not go to bed hungry either. A protein-rich micro-snack can be ideal to reduce nighttime waking and to feel better rested, and more satiated in the morning. Try a hard-boiled egg, some sliced turkey, or banana with peanut butter.

FAQs

Can a lack of sleep cause stomach bloating?

Sleep duration, sleep quality, and the gut microbiome work synergistically. Poor sleep leads to digestive issues like bloating, constipation, gas, IBS and distention.

Does eating sugar before bed affect sleep?

Studies show that eating sugar before bed wreaks havoc on your sleep by spiking the hormones insulin and cortisol, which both arouse you from your sleep or keep you from falling asleep.

What foods are easy to digest and promote sleep?

Protein rich foods such as oily fish, poultry, beef, eggs, seeds, nuts, milk and soy are plentiful in tryptophan, a hormone that helps promote sleep. Tryptophan needs carbohydrates to help carry it to the brain where it can create more serotonin. Eat foods that have tryptophan and carbohydrates together. Try a handful of mixed nuts and seeds with fresh fruit, a cup of warm spiced milk, or a small amount of turkey with a few tart cherries to help enhance your sleep. Tart cherries are a phytonutrient that are also rich in tryptophan and help to enhance melatonin production.

Before the bed-in-a-box industry revolutionized how people buy mattresses, innerspring beds reigned supreme. But these days, most companies create stylish hybrid models.

Though they look similar, hybrid and innerspring mattresses aren’t identical. In this hybrid vs innerspring mattress comparison, we’ll go over all of the important components of each bed and help you find the best mattress for your sleep needs.

Hybrid vs Innerspring Mattress – What’s the Difference?

You’ve probably wondered, “What’s the difference between a hybrid and an innerspring mattress?” The short answer: hybrid mattresses have more cushioning than innerspring beds. Because of this construction difference, each bed works well for different people.

Who Should Get A Hybrid Mattress?

  • Fans of mattresses that feel more plush
  • People with joint pain

Who Should Get An Innerspring Mattress?

  • Fans of particularly bouncy mattresses
  • Stomach sleepers

What is a Hybrid Mattress?

Hybrid mattresses got their name because they contain two different components: coils and comfort layers. Whether the top layers are made out of latex or gel-infused memory foam, they usually offer plenty of pressure relief for the sleeper.

Layer Description
Cover The first thing you’ll see is the mattress cover, usually made out of a breathable cotton material.
Comfort Layers To be considered a hybrid mattress, the bed must contain at least 2” of comfort materials. There’s no specification for what this layer is made out of – it could be latex, gel foam, polyfoam, or even a cotton pillow top!
Support Layer Hybrid mattresses have support coils in the base layer. This make the mattress feel more responsive than all-foam beds, but not quite as bouncy as traditional innerspring mattresses

The interior of a hybrid mattress

Benefits of a Hybrid Mattress

  • Offers more pressure relief – This is great for folks who suffer from joint pain. It also benefits side sleepers because the comfort layers cushion shoulders and hips.
  • Feels Responsive – Hybrid mattresses are more responsive than all-foam beds, but they aren’t as bouncy as innersprings. This could be a good option for folks who want a bed that has a more balanced feel.
  • Easy to find – These days, mattress manufacturers are creating more hybrids than innersprings, so there are many options to choose from.
  • More variety – Because hybrid mattresses contain different comfort layers, customers can be choosy with how they want their bed to feel. Latex foam is great for hot sleepers who want something a bit more supportive, while memory foam works well for folks who need more pressure relief and body contouring.

Drawbacks of a Hybrid Mattress

  • Not always the best choice for stomach sleepers – Because hybrid beds have at least 2” of cushioning on top, they usually aren’t supportive enough for stomach sleepers.
  • They tend to cost more – Some hybrid mattresses contain many high-quality materials, which can drive up the price.
  • Might sleep hot at night – If a hybrid mattress has a thick layer of memory foam on top, sleepers could start to overheat at night.

The Best Hybrid Mattresses

Think a hybrid mattress is the best choice for you? Fortunately, we’ve reviewed hundreds of different beds and rounded up a list of the best hybrid mattresses.

We particularly like Helix, because its sleep quiz matches sleepers to their ideal bed. The new Nectar hybrid mattress is great for folks who want a plush memory foam bed that still feels responsive. Fans of flippable mattresses will love the Layla Hybrid – it has two firmness levels in one!

A woman sleeps on the Nectar Premier Hybrid mattress

What is an Innerspring mattress?

Innerspring mattresses share many similarities with hybrids, but the main difference is that innerspring mattresses have less than 2” of comfort materials on top.

Layer Description
Cover Innerspring mattresses typically have soft covers made out of cotton or another breathable fabric.
Comfort Layers To be considered an innerspring mattress, the bed must have less than 2” of comfort materials on top. Most innerspring mattresses feature a thin layer of cushioning, often in the form of a Euro top or pillow top.
Support Layer Like hybrid mattresses, innerspring beds contain springy coils in the support layer.

The interior of an innerspring mattress

Benefits of an Innerspring Mattress

  • They have a more traditional feel – If you’re a fan of classic, bouncy mattresses, you may want to opt for an innerspring bed.
  • They’re easier to move around on – Because innerspring mattresses are particularly bouncy, they are great options for people who have mobility issues.
  • They are firmer than hybrid mattresses – This is beneficial for stomach sleepers, who need additional hip support.

Drawbacks of an Innerspring Mattress

  • They don’t offer as much comfort – If you’re a side sleeper, you may want to opt for a hybrid mattress that offers more pressure relief.
  • They tend to squeak – As time goes on, innerspring mattresses can become noisy.
  • They are harder to find – Most mattress companies have steered away from manufacturing innerspring mattresses, so they can be more difficult to find – especially if you want to order one online.

The Best Innerspring Mattresses

Though they are harder to come by, innerspring mattresses still exist in the marketplace. One of our favorite brands is Saatva. Their classic model is available in three firmness levels and has a plush pillow top.

Summary

The differences between hybrid and innerspring mattresses are subtle, but even so, each bed will work best for different types of people. If you’re looking for a mattress with more comfort and plushness, opt for a hybrid. But if you want a traditional firm and bouncy mattress, innerspring is the way to go.

FAQs

Still have questions? We are here to help. Check out our FAQ section below to learn more.

What is the difference between a hybrid and an innerspring mattress?

Hybrid and innerspring mattresses both have coils for support, but hybrid mattresses contain at least 2” of comfort materials and innerspring beds contain less.

Do you need a box spring with a hybrid mattress?

No, you don’t! With hybrid mattresses, box springs are optional. Some people like them because they offer additional support and make the mattress taller, however, a hybrid mattress will still have a long lifespan if it’s not placed on top of a box spring.

Ultimately, it boils down to what you need from your mattress. Many people love innerspring beds because they offer ample lumbar support and are easy to move around on. Some folks prefer hybrid mattresses because they offer more comfort and pressure relief.

Can an innerspring mattress be used on an adjustable base?

Because of their sturdy construction, innerspring mattresses don’t work well on adjustable bases. Typically, all-foam mattresses work best.

  • Fans of fluffy down alternative pillows
  • Sleepers looking for a hypoallergenic pillow
  • People of all sleeping positions

Who Might Not Like the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow?

  • Shoppers on a budget

  • Those who prefer slow-moving memory foam pillows

Saatva Down Alternative Pillow Firmness and Feel

So, how firm is the Saatva Down Alternative pillow and what does it feel like? Let’s talk about it!

How Firm is Saatva Down Alternative Pillow?

The Saatva Down Alternative pillow only has one firmness option available. I’d say this pillow is a soft, to just barely medium-firm pillow. It’s full of a fluffy down alternative that gives it a very soft feel. It has a supportive core, but that doesn’t influence the firmness too much.

Sleeping on Saatva Down Alternative Pillow

Let’s discuss my experience with the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow.

As a side sleeper, that’s where I started. This pillow made me feel really comfortable. Even though the fill is on the softer side, there’s a lot of it, and the supportive inner core kept my head from sinking to the top of my mattress. This is a great pillow for keeping your head and neck in a neutral alignment if you’re a side sleeper.

Moving on to my back, I felt really comfortable here, too. My head compressed the softer outer layer, but the supportive inner core kept it from going too far back.

Finally, shifting to my stomach, this pillow did a good job. I was able to compress the pillow a good amount. I think this could work for my fellow heavier bodied stomach sleepers, but I wouldn’t recommend it to every stomach sleeper out there.

I’d be worried about the supportive core preventing some of you from compressing it enough. And when stomach sleepers sleep with a pillow that’s too tall, neck pain could develop over time.

30-60 Min Nap

Now it was nap time. I felt really comfortable while resting on my side when I tested this awake, so that’s where I started. One thing I noticed as I settled in was there was a bit of a hot spot that developed on the pillow. This could have been just the pillow reacting to my body temperature. But after a bit, the pillow seemed to cool off.

I really liked this pillow for side sleeping because, even though it’s not the tallest pillow, it did a great job at keeping my head and neck elevated and not craning downward while I slept. And truth be told, I stayed put during this nap. I tend to toss and turn a lot, but I didn’t feel the need to on this pillow.

But even if you’re a tosser and turner, adjusting positions will be really easy on this pillow. And if you’re a back/side combination sleeper, this should be a win for you.

What does the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow Feel Like?

The Saatva Down Alternative Pillow feels very fluffy and soft. You can compress this pillow and feel the supportive inner core. And the outer cotton cover feels equally soft! This pillow really exudes a soft, luxurious feel.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

For the average weight folks, the Saatva Down Alternative pillow is a great choice for all three sleeping positions. Back sleepers will get comfort and support, while side sleepers will get a good amount of neck support to keep their heads from craning downward.

Stomach sleepers should be able to compress the pillow enough to get it low and flat to prevent your head from craning upwards. Overall, a great choice!

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

As a heavier individual myself, this pillow worked well for me, so it should work well for people with my body type. I found it most comfortable on my side and back. And heavyweight stomach sleepers will be able to compress the pillow very well to get it low and flat.

If you are worried about head and neck support, however, you may want to opt for a firmer pillow.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Lightweight side sleepers who love a soft, fluffy pillow will enjoy the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow. And it should still be a good option for back sleepers, too! I’d be worried about lightweight stomach sleepers, however. Though this is a very soft pillow, the supportive inner core is just that: very supportive. Lightweight stomach sleepers might not compress the pillow enough, and their heads could crane upwards, which is a recipe for neck pain.

Saatva Down Alternative Pillow Construction

Saatva sources high-end materials for its products. Let’s see what goes into the Saatva Down Alternative pillow.

Cover

On the outside of the Saatva pillow, there is a high-quality, 100% organic cotton cover that has been made with the sateen weave. The cotton is very breathable, and the sateen weave makes it feel very soft and silky.

Core

On the inside, Saatva uses a combination of plush microdenier fibers, a type of synthetic fiber, and microfiber clusters. Saatva calls these clusters “memory fiber clusters,” and this combination of materials gives this pillow a very plush, but supportive fill. Though this is a very moldable pillow, this isn’t an adjustable pillow. Meaning, you cannot take out or add in the fill material.

Height/Loft

This pillow is very moldable, but when fluffed to its normal size, it stands at around 5” tall.

Saatva Down Alternative Pillow Performance

With how this pillow sleeps out of the way, let’s talk about a few more key considerations that you should keep in mind when looking at the Saatva Down Alternative pillow.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Down alternative pillows can go both ways when it comes to being cool or hot. The microfiber clusters are more breathable than insulating down, but unless a down alternative has cooling components, it can trap heat.

Luckily, I didn’t find myself sleeping too hot with this pillow. There was a bit of a warm spot on the back of my head when I first tested the pillow out, but once my body adjusted to the temperature of my room, I felt very comfortable.

Plus, this pillow has a very breathable cotton cover on the outside, which can help air flow through the pillow easily. But if you are an exceptionally hot sleeper who needs a cool pillow, be sure to look at our best cooling pillows list.

Off-Gassing

The Saatva Down Alternative pillow comes inside of a plastic bag once you pull it out of the packaging. There is no need to let it expand, and you shouldn’t experience any off-gassing or a chemical smell to it.

Care Instructions

To help keep your pillow clean and last longer, keeping it inside of a pillowcase is recommended. However, accidents happen. If you spill something, or just need to clean a stain, Saatva recommends spot cleaning only. This is not a machine-washable pillow.

Allergies

Saatva lists this pillow as 100% hypoallergenic. If you have sensitive allergies, or want a pillow to fight the buildup of dust and resist mildew, this is a pillow for you!

How Does the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow Compare To Other Pillows?

Saatva is known as a luxury brand, but it’s not the only one. And if you’re not the biggest fan of fluffy down alternative pillows, it’s always good to see how other pillows compare.

Let’s compare the Saatva Down Alternative pillow to two other popular brands: Brooklyn Bedding and Layla.

Saatva vs Brooklyn Bedding

Brooklyn Bedding’s Talalay Latex pillow is a popular pillow here at Mattress Clarity and for good reason. It’s made of a single piece of Talalay latex foam, which is going to feel much different than the Saatva pillow.

An image of the Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex pillow propped up against a headboard.

Latex foam is very springy and responsive, while the down alternative in the Saatva pillow feels very plush and cushiony. But regardless of their feel, both pillows will work well for all three sleeping positions. Both should be relatively easy to move around on as well, but Saatva really exudes that luxurious and plush hotel pillow feel.

Brooklyn Bedding is known for some affordable mattresses, and the same could be said for the Talalay latex pillow. If you’re prioritizing budget over luxury, the Brooklyn Bedding pillow is the way to go.

Saatva vs Layla

If you’re looking for a pillow that conforms to your head, and has a cooling pillow cover, the Layla Kapok pillow is a good option to look at. Unlike the fluff found in the Saatva pillow, the Layla pillow features shredded memory foam and plush kapok tree fibers.

This gives the Layla pillow a slow-moving feel that will let you sink into it. This pillow is adjustable as well, meaning you can take out or add in the inner fill to adjust its loft and feel, and make it match your sleeping style. While you can’t adjust the Saatva pillow, most sleepers of all positions should be able to get what they need out of it.

Both should be a good option for hot sleepers, but the only cooling feature to the Saatva pillow is a breathable cotton cover. Layla’s gone a step further and infused copper into the cover, which will pull body heat away from you so you can sleep comfortably and cool.

FAQs

Let’s answer some frequently asked questions about Saatva and the Saatva Down Alternative pillow.

Which Saatva pillow is best for side sleepers?

Saatva sells three pillows: the latex pillow, the down alternative pillow, and the memory foam pillow. The brand recommends the memory foam pillow for side sleepers, but truth be told, all of them work.

The down alternative pillow will work especially well for back and side combination sleepers who tend to change position frequently. It’s soft but very supportive and easy to move around on.

What if I don’t like my Saatva Down Alternative pillow?

Don’t stress! You have 45 days to test out this pillow to see if it’s right for you. If, during that time, you decide it’s not the perfect match for you, you can return it for a full refund.

How long will the Saatva Down Alternative pillow last?

Down alternative pillows aren’t the longest lasting. However, Saatva uses high quality cotton and very durable polyester microfibers in its pillow. The brand offers a 1-year limited warranty on the pillow, so with good care, it should last at least that long, if not up to two years, with good care.
